Tamil Protesters Block Toronto Street for Fifth Day
For the fifth day in a row, a group of protesters from Toronto's Tamil community has closed down traffic to a stretch of road in the city. The protesters numbers have grown and shrunk over the last five days, but traffic continues to be closed by police.
Observers estimate that the crowd may have peaked at about 4,000 people on Monday, and has been largely a peaceful protest. On Wednesday 15 people were arrested after some of the protesters spilled into the intersection at Dundas St. West.
University Ave. is closed between Dundas and Queen Sts. as protesters demonstrate in front of the U.S. consulate in an effort to convince the Canadian and American governments to intervene in the conflict in Sri Lanka.Protesters arrived in droves Sunday evening, when the demonstrations began. The numbers quickly grew from hundreds to about 4,000 by 4 a.m. on Monday.
Since then, the numbers have grown and shrunk, depending on the weather and time of day.

Thanks for this story. It seems this story was not picked up by our national news either.

Enough already! You can't just shut down major streets with several hospitals right at that intersection. Police have gotten the streets reopened now, and less than 100 protesters are left there.

Freedom of expression is very important though.
Those LTTE flags look majestic.

Of course, Agent. The protest wasn't the problem, it was more or less peaceful, as most protests in Canada are.
The location - in a high traffic, very condensed area, was the problem. Of course, having the U.S. Consulate downtown is a problem in itself. All the buildings around it have to have more than normal safety/emergency measures in place at all times.

Would you feel the same if the Native Indians are protesting against an action to destroy their community in Canada ?
I accept that major arteries should not be blocked where there are 3 major hospitals and emergency vehicles have to get through fast enough to help a patient with life threatening situation.
My question still to you is: How many of you Canadians have truly considered the grievance of the Tamils Canadians who have lost many immediate family members in Sri Lanka? How many of you have tried to understand their basic requests like
1. Pressure media freedom in Sri Lanka,
2. Pressure foreign aid agencies to work with the IDPs, and
3. Pressure the Canadian Governement at least voice, just in paper, these requests to Sri Lanka.
Does a human life only matters if they are Canadian?
A Third world oppressed minority's death, torture, rape, forced dissappearnce, and killings has to go unnoticed even if they are related to a Canadian, a mother or father or sister or brother or a relative or a friend?!!
Do you think Canadians Tamils would be out there on streets begging to pay attention to the issue if the Canadians have bothered to show some respect to the Tamils' lives lost in Sri Lanka and to tried to prevent a genocide in progress? These are people who got jobs, studies and families, taking time out to protest for a cause to save lives.
The only thing Canadians have found imperative is to worry about what inconveniences have been caused by the Tamils' protest.
The only thing I can see from the reaction is that Canada has not accepted immigrated Citizens as well as it portrays to be!!!

Besides the overt inconvenience of the protest and the blocking of a major roadway I'd actually be fine with the protests if the genuine concern of the protest were for the civilians trapped in the fighting.
Sadly this is not the case. If you listen closely and take a better look at the placards and posters you can see the unconditional support for the LTTE are the underline basis for these protests. The LTTE are the ones who have brought this humanitarian crisis upon the Tamil people in northern Sri Lanka, by holding them as human shields on a beach to protect their defeated leadership. They are eagerly awaiting foreign intervention of some sort to cut them a break so they can fight another day. For years the supporters of the LTTE here in Toronto have funneled money, logistics and smuggled weapons into Sri Lanka to fight a brutal war all for a selfish mono-ethnic separate state on an island the size of West Virginia. So in the past year the recent government said "enough is enough" and stepped up their military efforts to go after the LTTE and with enormous success as you can see they are trapped in a 12 sq km stretch of land. Additionally governments around the world proscribed the LTTE as a terrorist group and effectively put a halt to the terrorist funding. So for the past 4 months this pro-LTTE crowd have gone on a two faced protest demanding foreign intervention for the battered tiger unit, as they clearly know that every ceasefire the LTTE have regrouped/rearmed to fight a bloodier war. They use terms like "Genocide" (clearly not knowing the meaning of the word), use of cluster bombs, phosphorus weapons and rape to get sympathizers to their cause.
Even you Tamiya, use utterly false terms like "Genocide" loosely to describe an internal civil war. Let me explain to you that a Genocide is a complete extermination or expulsion of an ethnic group from their land. If you take a look at Sri Lanka's demographics, a substantial amount of Tamil people live among the Sinhalese in the southern areas. Not only that, Tamils are actively working in high level government positions, have equal opportunities at education and have the tamil language listed as an official language in the constitution. Additionally when the army recently blew up a LTTE made earth barrier, 10000 crossed over to government lines. A bit strange for the victims of a supposed 'Genocide' to run to their perpetrators don't you think? Contrast that with the LTTE who have ethnically cleansed the north-east of Muslims and murdered anyone (including India's Prime Minister Rajiv Ghandi) who opposed their rule. Prolonging this war will only see results of the slaughter of thousands more. Imo a democratic government is a far, FAR better alternative to a terrorist group that has perfected suicide bombing and use of child soldiers as a means of achieving their goals.
Canadians including me have every right to be pissed at these protest as they aren't genuine, they are a disgrace to actual protests about actual genocides that are occuring in the world and their methods are highly disruptive & reckless.
It is absolutely offensive to state that "Canada has not accepted immigrated Citizens as well as it portrays to be". Canada has, is and always will accept immigrants (like me) who will treat it like its their new home to prosper and enrich -- not as a staging ground for a separatist war in a foreign country. Perhaps you should be saying that some immigrants have not accepted Canada as their new home as they clearly portray in these protests.

Skreech,
Very good analysis by you. Shows that not all Westerners can be fooled by LTTE propaganda.
"Even you Tamiya, use utterly false terms like "Genocide" loosely to describe an internal civil war."
Not only that Skreech, Tamiya has openly said once or twice he/she supports LTTE terrorism.

So, I guess you can see where the call for a Cease Fire is coming from.

"The only thing I can see from the reaction is that Canada has not accepted immigrated Citizens as well as it portrays to be!!!"
So, are these immigrated "Citizens" planning to leave Canada in protest ? Like there was a call to boycott Sri Lankan Airlines and such?
Just curious to know.. ;)

On another note I'd like to say as far a the concerns of the Natives go, they haven't recruited suicide bombers, child soldiers or driven truck loaded explosives at civilian infrastructure. Instead they used words and peaceful protests so its gotten them far more than the LTTE have ever gotten.
I doubt much of your population in Texas or in the United States as a whole for that fact would have been happy if other nations put pressure on the U.S. to observe a ceasefire with Taliban/Al-Qaeda after the 9/11 attacks.

We dont want more of your community we canadians wants all tamoul to be deported back to where they came from.

Tamil Terrorists did the same in Sri Lanka and upgraded their stupidity in to killing the security officials.
They will start to do the same in Canada, very soon!

Every person protesting there have a very sad history in their past.. their parents, son ,daughter, relatives might have been killed, tortured , raped etc. They don't want that to happen to other brothers and sisters out there who has no voice to speak.. All they ask is to save the innocent people who are getting killed not in hundreds .. in thousands.. In the last 3 months alone 7000 tamils are killed and 14000 are injured by sri lanka. whats wrong in asking their government to raise the voice against this genocide ..
at 22:12 on April 30th, 2009
"whats wrong in asking their government to raise the voice against this genocide .."
Nothing wrong. "Aanly" all right. Since the government in question arrested some of them, what is the next course of action ?

Fifty percent of Toronto's population are immigrants, so acceptance is not the problem - public health and safety is. Our police are now being criticized for being over-tolerant.

Those 50% contribute to build economy in Toronto.
However, if they have any grievances it has to be closed doors, and they had to swallow their pains and go on as usual with their lives ?!
I don't see equality, I only see immigrant workers brought in to do work. It is mutually beneficial for these immigrants as they ran from a hostile situation somewhat.
These immigrant citizens' voices, however, should remain silent, right?
Canada is not willing to hear their voices, or to enable them to grief actively.
Even for 300,000 Tamils, I have not seen one single health effort to try to set up a grievance counseling session for these people. If Canada has actually bothered to listen even a tad bit to these people voices, then there would have been at least quite a few of these efforts. Many of these Tamils Canadians have been part of those efforts to comfort others.
I have seen many cases where even one life loss in a community in Toronto has resutlted in such services made available to them. However the thousands family members died in this Sri Lanka's dirty war for these Canadian Tamils somehow is not addressed whatsoever!!!

Natt Anly these 50% , remaining 5000% too contributed to the economy and the host society (very important. Economy without any socio-cultural contribution does not lead anywhere).Whenever write anything never see that part - always write "Dumeel."
Natt much of the immigrants have contributed more to terrorism like this particular group. Barring the Khalistan terrorists - bombed a plane in the midair killing 300+ people - the biggest terror attack in Canadian history. But that terrorism was already put to rest and how strange.! - same fate is waiting for LTTE terrorists too. The similarities do not end there either. Like Khalistan terrorists, LTTE also going to be inactive in the originated country. But an adamant, but gradually decaying Diaspora with fuming minds will remain for some time (say for another 20 - 30 years) only go into oblivion.
Old terrorists never die, they just fade away.
I see only equality here. All terrorists and their supporters are treated like vermin by Canadian society - god bless the country and the people..!
By the way, read the latest UNSC decision not to block Sri Lanka's loan from IMF?

The racism spewed by some of you does not surprise me. When will Canadians be able to shake their white privilege and understand that we are part of the problem? The issue is not Tamil protests inconveniencing Torontonians, the issue is racist canadians who dont care about anyone but themselves. We are part of this problem.
The Canadian government has strong diplomatic ties with the Sri Lankan government, and like the U.S have provided logistical support to the Sri Lankan military. Thus, Canada, and silent Canadians are complicit in the genocide taking place.
Who cares if you were late for work, or if major arteries are blocked? people should be going on strike given what's taking place in this country. Yesterday, I was with a contingent of May day protesters who attempted to join the Tamil protesters in support, but were blocked by police. People waving Palestinian and Tamil flags, chanting things like "from Palestine to Tamil Eelam, Occupation is a crime", "stop the genocide" and "no justice no peace, no racist police" were forced to chant on the sidewalk as the hopeful tamil protesters looked on, hoping we would be let through by the confrontational Toronto Police. Suddenly, as someone was speaking through the megaphone, the police grabbed him and threw him to the ground as police pushed us away, unable to help an innocent man from being arrested. What's the charge? "breaching the peace". Apparently, brown people cant speak on side walks; they can only speak if caged in like animals.
I was kicked and had my flag taken from me, told by the police that it was a weapon. Well the only weapons there yesterday, were the power bestowed upon a group of white police officers who dont like it when the immigrants get uppity. Enough is enough. Wake up and realize what's going on around you. It is not a coincidence that the Immigration minister is rounding up workers in detention centres and cutting funding to community organizations who criticize the government.
People are dying and that matters more than how quickly you can get to the eaton centre, or how hospitals are located nearby. Tamils are being killed indiscriminately. Palestinians are living under brutal Apartheid, and the first nations here face horrid conditions you couldnt imagine in your yuppie life, Blue Crush

"...issue is racist canadians" ..blah..blah..."....brown people cant speak on side walks; they can only speak if caged in like animals. "
Shouting "racism" for anything and everything would subdue any white in Canada. cool..!! Very effective against anyone white. So let us presume that majority of the Police officers were white.
".....Palestinian and Tamil flags,"
Palestinian and LTTE terrorist organization's flags.
"...complicit in the genocide taking place. "
Lie.
"....here face horrid conditions you couldnt imagine in your yuppie life, Blue Crush"
Slumdog millionaire tactic. Anything wrong in the world , is white man's fault..! Excellento..!!
