The head of the Metropolitan Police Sir Paul Stephenson revealed that the cost of policing the Tamil protests in central London has now reached £8 million, a figure higher than that of the entire security for the G20.

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner who spoke in front of the Home Affairs Select Committee stated that he was "concerned" that the effectiveness of his force was being hindered by the attempts of Tamil Protestors blocking key parts of central London.

Policing the Tamil protests in central London has been according to an insider source at the Met "a nightmare" given the criticism of the policing methods of the G20.

Early this morning Tamil protestors were moved into the centre of Parliament Square, and moved away from the roads around the House of Parliament. Ten arrests have been made according to the Met with Reuters reporting that “Britain has a large Tamil population, estimated at around 300,000. Many expressed disbelief on Monday that the civil war waged by the Tamil Tiger movement since the early 1980s had come to an end, and said it would resume.”

Sir Paul Stephenson and Commander Bob Broadhurst have been answering the questions of MPs on the methods deployed during the G20 policing in the City.
