Liberal Democrat Chairman of the Commons International Affairs Select Committee and MP for Gordon, Malcolm Bruce accused Tamil Tigers as terrorists and said "unless you end terrorism you can’t actually build the united Sri Lanka". He made this eye opening statement on BBC Radio-4 interview after coming back to UK from a two day visit in Sri Lanka.

At the invitation of Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa, a cross-party group of UK parliamentarians visited Sri Lanka for 'an independent fact finding mission' on 4th and 5th of May. It was focused on the ongoing humanitarian crisis largely exaggerated by pro- Tamil Tiger propaganda network, few British politicians and some NGOs and INGOs.

The group was headed by the special envoy of the British Prime Minister, Des Browne, Labour MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun. The delegation included John Bercow (Conservative MP for Buckingham); Malcolm Bruce (Liberal Democrat MP for Gordon); Eddie McGrady (Social Democratic and Labour Party MP for South Down) and Mohammad Sarwar (Labour MP for Glasgow Central).

British delegation held meetings with politicians, civil society figures and personally visited IDP camps in the North of Sri Lanka. In a different statement MP Macolm Bruce said "Horror stories in Britain about conditions in Sri Lanka camps housing hundreds of thousands of Tamil refugees are wrong. There may be shortages, but refugees I spoke to were happy to have escaped the fighting in the North".

He highly appreciated the way Sri Lankan government handle the situation with fewer resources and further said “They have done an extremely good job. Although it has to be said they are trying extremely hard, which quite impressive what they are doing”.
The full interview of the BBC Radio-4 as follows.
BBC Radio 4: A Group of MPs just returns from fact finding mission to Sri Lanka. We are joining one of them, Malcolm Bruce, the Liberal Democrat Chairs of International Affairs Select Committee. Good morning!

Malcolm Bruce, MP: Good morning!

BBC: What did you find?

Malcolm Bruce, MP: Well, we had the opportunity to visit camps in the North where people have recently managed to find shelter having escaped from the conflict zone. I think the Sri Lankan authorities are under extremely pressure 135,000 people escaped from the area held by the terrorists and of cause they have to provide camps for very short notice. In that sense they have done an extremely good job. They are under intense pressure..., and our concern was that they were not allowing international agencies and UN in fast enough to support the Government what they are doing and to meet the needs of the people both in terms of food, shelter and the water and sanitation. Although it has to be said they are trying extremely hard, which quite impressive what they are doing.

BBC: But there still lots of people caught in the fighting. Aren’t they?

Malcolm Bruce, MP: Well, there are unknown number of people figure between ten and hundred thousand (10,000 - 100,000) trapped inside the conflict zone and of course there is a concern if the Government were to finish off the terrorists and they would have to same time finishing off their own civilians. I think at the moment it appears there is an attempt to try and find a solution that will end the war without causing great colossal damage to local civilians. We did find quiet lot of people we spoke to, freely told us that they were unable to leave the conflict zone before they were given the assistance by the Sri Lankan Army because there were threatened with shooting by their own side. Many of them were with children not repaired to take that risk.

BBC: It actually you can say you think that there is a search on some kind of resolution which would avoid further difficulties for the civilians caught in the conflict zone because until now the Sri Lankan seems pretty determined to finish off the job they begun in military terms.

Malcolm Bruce, MP: You can’t really blame them. I mean the country….(interruption……)

BBC: I wasn’t. I asked a usual question. I just want to raise what you say

Malcolm Bruce, MP: I think the point is obviously it is determination trying to end the 30 years of conflict into deal with terrorists for ever. But I think partly because of the pressure from international community and also recognition these are Sri Lankan citizens, they want to find a way of doing it, does not kill more and indeed many have already died. And in that cause huge frustration for the military because they want to take out the terrorists but they can’t do it without these hostages getting in between. At the moment it is a deadlock.

BBC: You are just using the word, terrorists. It is a very loaded one. We are talking about the Tamil Tiger rebels here, Aren’t you?

Malcolm Bruce, MP: Well, I have to say these Tamil Tigers have assassinated many many Tamils including in and out of governments and the opposition parties and we had very credible evidence many of the people we met in camps to say they were threatened and shot at by their own side and told them if they try to leave the conflict zone their lives be at risk and in those circumstances, I think there is a clear indication that this is a divided community and the unless you end terrorism you can’t actually build the united Sri Lanka.

Rt Hon. Malcolm Bruce was  skeptical when he arrived in Sri Lanka. However, when he was briefed on the progress of the humanitarian effort, he realized that his thoughts and ideas about the present situation were wrong.

So far, all the foreign dignitaries who visited Sri Lanka to talk about this issue, although they were disillusioned on arrival, went back to their respective countries happy, knowing that many positive things were hapennining especially on the humanitarian side.

We all agree that the combat zone is dangerous for any out sider to enter. For, what the tired and limping Terrorist leader Prabhakaran's actions cannot be visualized at this time.

However, it is heartening news that more and more foreign political dignitaries will be allowed to go in to the area where the humanitarian operations are ongoing. Definitely, the refugees in northern Sri Lanka are doing very  much better and are better looked after and cared for than those in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Thanks for this story Lalith. It is heartening to see that there are politicians in the UK who do not try to pump oxygen to the LTTE, and who are not afraid to call a terrorist, a terrorist when they see one.

A Letter from England to Malcom Bruce MP

at 05:42 on May 11th, 2009

Malcom Bruce MP
Dear Sir,
We are a group of Sri Lankan expatriates. In comparison to a thousand protesting tigers at the parliament square, may I say that we are the silent majority.
We write to congratulate you on your recent fact finding mission to Sri Lanka and the subsequent radio interview on BBC.  Although we were apprehensive at the start with the group of 5MPs visiting Sri Lanka, your interview suggests that the jouney there has been a personally enlightening experience to the commitment of the Government and the popular voice of Sri Lankans seeking a lasting peace.
You may have gathered that there is no popular consensus amongst the muslim, sinhala and the tamil people on a divided Sri Lanka as the British Tamil propaganda claim.  We've always lived, played and inter-married amongst the races as one people. We've lived together for thousands of years on that island without borders or separation even before the first British landed in 1815. Even today  56% of the Tamil people still live amongst the majority sinhalese in the colombo suburbs with a harmonious existence.

The above proves that the crisis in Sri Lanka is neither an ethnic nor a historical issue.
It is indeed a terrorist issue.

The people have mandated the present government with a 72% majority vote to completely wipe-out 30 years of suicide bombing culture of the terrorists. The government and the security forces are determined that this  culture of terrorism should not be passed to the next generation.  The elections were held in the western province just two weeks ago.  The 72% mandate was delivered by all the races in that country because they knew the the present government could be trusted to deliver justice and fair opportunity even for the most hardcore of the terrorists.  As men of politics and numbers even your colleagues might agree that a ruling party must be doing something right to receive that many votes mid term.

I hope you had a chance to study that there are 17 elected MP's and 4 cabinet ministers who are ethnically Tamil in Sri Lanka - despite the discrimination rhetoric that the British Tamils claim. You may also have observed that Col Karuna Amman (LTTE for 20 years) having rejected terrorism is now a Member of Parliament with a Ministerial designation for National Integration. He had to work hard for over an year to get there but he did. This is not the only success story. Pillaiyan (another ex-LTTE leader) is now the Chief Minister of the Eastern province. Where as the LTTE killed all of their Tamil leaders - the Tamils there find social justice and equality amongst the majority Sinhalese.

These are the realities of Lanka your colleagues Ed Davey and Simon Hugues  seem to dismiss due to the  pressure from their constituents.

The protesting Tamils of London - have a different agenda to the Tamils of Sri Lanka.  That is how can they or their peers maintain the myth of Eelam?  - not only have they gained asylum entry to the UK on a lie, they have contributed through out their working life sustaining a terrorist organisation based on this myth.  The saddest part is that they have lived this lie at home in the eyes of their own children.  The reality to these British Tamil children is the lie of their parents swore upon and the continued sustenance of a terrorist organisation that indiscriminately kills anyone in the vicinity of a 500 yard radius of a suicide bomber. We as Sri Lankans having lived with this callous disregard for human life for 30 years are scared of Terrorist reprisals. We know it well . This is why we shy away from confrontational engagement with any LTTE sympathiser. Flag carrying or not.  Yet what hope for the younger generation of British Tamil children, unless the reality is spoken to them... as you have on Radio4?

Sir, we the silent majority of the Sri Lankan expatriates include Tamils, Muslims, Burgher and Sinhalese. We do not protest, block roads, create a nuisance, knock or ring every five minutes to speak of grievances. As much as the general british public we get on with our lives being fairly resilient to minor irritations.  But we have been embarrassed for too long at the the levels of conniving deceit of these protesting tamils who continue to disgrace Sri Lanka - with ever exaggerated claims and soon bringing their local MPs to near disrepute.

With your position as Chair of the International Development Select Committee  we hope you would please advise the other Members of your House not to be mislead by the sophisticated propaganda machine mobilised by the Tamil Tigers, the need to support democracy and the urgent need to assist and corporate with the government of Sri Lanka.  Terrorism must end for dialogue to begin - no one sane would approach a suicide bomber seeking reason.

We hope you would visit Sri Lanka once again to enjoy our hospitality when the terrorism is completely vanquished.

Yours sincerely

Channa
