Tamilnadu Strike on Sri Lankan war is Success. Citizen irritated

The twelve hours Tamilnadu strike called by the ruling party DMK brought the state to stand-still - so it can be called a success. Though worried about the safety of the civilian hostages trapped in the crossfire between the Sri Lankan Army and LTTE terrorists, people in Tamilnadu generally felt that this is an unnecessary election stunt by the ruling DMK to get votes.

DMK called this strike to put pressure on Indian Government to force Sri Lanka to stop the military actions against LTTE.

Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta said arrangements had been made to ensure that candidates are able to file nominations for the Lok Sabha elections despite the shutdown.

With the usually clogged arterial road Anna Salai devoid of traffic, young boys merrily played cricket. D Masilamani, a 13-year-old and one of the players, and his mates had a general idea about the ethnic issue in Sri Lanka but doubted if the strike would have an impact on the situation.

"We are emotional and all that. But the fighting is happening some 1,000 km away. We are not (even) too bothered about what happens in the next street," said S.K. Muruga Das, a young player.

M Bhupathy Rajan, 40, who runs an outlet selling electronic knick-knacks in Puducherry, was worried about a day's business lost.

"I will end up losing Rs.2,500 in profits because vacationing crowds usually throng Puducherry this time of the year. All of us are angry about Tamil suffering in Sri Lanka, but should our governments not do something more useful than calling for shutdowns?"

A visiting non-resident Indian doctor found the apathy confusing.

"While Tamils in the US and Canada are demonstrating noisily against the Sri Lankan government's military attacks, the general apathy here is confusing," T P Ramakrishnan, a general practitioner on a private visit from Pennsylvania, told IANS.

The DMK called Thursday's shutdown to press the central government to put pressure on Sri Lanka to declare a ceasefire.

I don't understand one thing.....

In india or Canada or UK or Sri lanka or anywhere else in the world.... All the reporters write , Political leaders believe....... If you supports LTTE you can get all the Tamils' votes.... Even Sinhala terroist like Rajapaksha , israeli.agent ...etc believe it.

Does it mean .... LTTE representative tamils in sri lanka ?. I don't believe it . ( I have to do some research) But every body else believe it...I guess.

Tranroy,
What I can sense is that you are a good person. I can also sense that you are confused.

You obviously do not support LTTE. Also what you say is correct. LTTE does NOT represent Tamils in Sri Lanka. Please, do not be misled by LTTE propaganda. Is it not more than clear that LTTE does not protect the Tamil people? But they have destroyed the Tamils of Sri Lanka for 25 years.

Since you do not support LTTE, also try not to believe what they say.

Further, israeli.agent is not a terrorist, nor is he a Sinhalese. He's a good hearted person who does not like terrorists.

Rajapaksha - I don't know personally, but he has not done any terrorist acts. He is only trying to solve a long standing problem in Sri Lanka, which he must do as the president.

Then ...why does he kill 1000s of Tamil civilians... Just because of few LTTEs you cannot kill all tamils.... Sri lankan government is Terrorist Government. That is for sure.  You have to raise your voice against GOSL. You the people have to protect Tamils from Terror Sri lankan Goverment. If you don't do so then the Tamils will go behind LTTE again.

On top of every thing... If you are ready to give  same rights to Tamils then there won't be any LTTE issue in your country. Trust me please.

It is one man who is responsible for the predicament of the unfortunate Tamil civilians, who have been taken hostage, and that one man is your almighty "Sun Goat"

If you all carry on chanting pro-LTTE slogans, waving LTTE flags, supporting the megalomaniac, that will not take you anywhere at this juncture.

So don't give this "if you are ready to give  same rights to Tamils then there won't be any LTTE issue in your country" nonsense since Tamils rights have been firmly established under the SL constitution.

A lot has changed since Vaddukkodai and you all need to come to grips with that reality, at least now.

When are you going to take off your glasses to see the truth?

Tranroy,

Have you ever lived in Sri Lanka? I don't know how old you are, but my guess is you are a young person. If so, what you know may be what your parents or some other relations tell you about how things were when they were in SL decades ago. There were very bad things done by some previous governments in SL. Those would be the times your parents would have lived here. But it is not right to judge the situation in Sri Lanka today, by what has happened some 20 years or more ago, specially if you want all communities in Sri Lanka to be peaceful.

If not, it might be things you see and hear on TV channels that broadcast LTTE propaganda. I know there are such channels that do this 24 hrs. Ask yourself, if the LTTE would ever tell the truth to the Tamil people, whom they have no misgivings in killing now?

Whatever your sources may be, you must come and visit Sri Lanka and then make a judgment yourself.

Tranroy, I have Tamil relations. My cousin whom I grew up with is married to a Tamil girl and they have an extremely cute and lovable Tamil+Sinhala little kid. So my cousin's wife's family have become our relations and I would be so shocked if someone tells me that they live as secondary citizens in Sri Lanka.

I ask you once again, do not blindly believe what the LTTE tells you.

Instead of continuing with your pro-LTTE antics, "pray" to your "Sun Goat" to release the Tamil civilian hostages. That will solve the issue once and for all.

Tranroy,

How exactly are you helping them right now? By doing copy/paste of tamilnet stories?

Tranroy,

1. Go back so many months on tamilnet- your most credible source of news, and tell us how many dead bodies can you see phtographed? Not just the figurs reported in thousands. The LTTE is equiped enough to transfer such proof if any, at a split of a second to the temilnet. There are casualties and deaths in a war. However I must say the civilian casualties and deaths have been minimal in the war during the last there years.

All waht you see is the same insident capptured from several angles and tha same video played over and over again. Please go back to your tamitnet and show the world proof of genocide.

2. As others commented before me, Please do not bring stories like tamils are being checked by the security forces and they are being harressed for being tamil. When the GOSL had to counter JVP terrorism in 1989-90, (99.99% Sinhala extremists who took to guns) it was all Sinhales that had to go through the trauma for being Sinhalese. The security forces jolly well new if they were to catch a JVPer, it was pointless going behind tamils. Similerly the US wont go behind the British, Norwegians or Japanies to catch Hamas or Al Qaida. You do not have to tell them where to find the terrorists thretening their interests. Similerly our national securty is paramount to us and our security forces are just doing that.

3. There is no point of talking about waht is happening in Sri Lanka as a direct result of LTTE terrorism & the counter acts by the legitimate forces. Once the LTTE is gone for ever there is no reason to fire guns.

4. Now let's talk of the rights that the Tamils are deprived of for being Tamils (so called 2nd class)  and the Sinhalese (so called 1st class) are privilaged to enjoy for being Sinhalese.

Please do not go back to 1948 & 1956 as I did not live int that era. However I very much want to live the next 50 years as a Sri Lankan
