Human rights violations are more than ever in Sri Lanka. After defeating the 26 year armed conflict, the Sri Lankan government could very well turn a minority community into a long path for peace and freedom in Sri Lanka.

However, the Rajapaksa regime has decided to do otherwise (1) imprison over 250,000 Tamil IDPs including over 50,000 Tamil children, (2) arrest over 10,000 Tamils as suspected Tiger cadets to indimitate, torture and kill without records, (3) sentence journalist JS Tissa to 20 years in prison for criticizing the government, (4) expelling UNICEF official James Elder for speaking the conditions children in the internment camps, (5) accusing Channel 4 for "ridiculous behavior" for releasing videos of the detention camps and extra-judicial killings of Tamils.

The path currently paved in Sri Lanka only leads to long term turmoil for Tamils in Sri Lanka.

This is really zero-sum identity politics: the Sinhalese government's victory viewed as the Tamils' catastrophic defeat. Colombo's streets are littered with so many pictures of president Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brothers that the incipient personality cult would shame a Chinese communist. The triumphalism in Colombo means those who dare to question the government are deemed Tiger collaborators, terrorist sympathisers or Tamil secessionists.

Any body talks or writes about human rights in Sri Lanka can be easily categorized as "Tiger sympatheizer" or "terrorist propagada", and will face the worse.

However the world should wake up when UNICEF, UN officials are deemed such in Sri Lanka, and news agencies are endlessly harrassed in protests outside of Sri Lanka for writing critically of the Sri Lankan government.

It's also impossible to see how beating up journalists or imprisoning writers for 20 years or expelling diplomats or threatening political thinkers in times of peace can be seen as anything but state intimidation, designed to kill off the idea that the Tamil minority could argue for parity with the Sinhalese majority.

"Sri Lankan government could very well turn a minority community into a long path for peace and freedom in Sri Lanka. "

That is exactly happening now. But because of the law of inertia, it will take some energy and effort to 'turn" anything to a different part.

Patience, brothers, patience. That is the key to success and well being..!!

BTW, what is 'rail' ?

Channel  4 again?

"Colombo's streets are littered with so many pictures of president Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brothers"

Still not as littered as the streets of Northern and Eastern Sri Lanka with pictures of Prabhakaran and his goons, during them days.

"Still not as littered as the streets of Northern and Eastern Sri Lanka with pictures of Prabhakaran and his goons, during them days." Even not littered as the soil of their dreamland with AP mines, which by all probability would have eventually been trampled by the very people they pretended to "liberate" !!

its the ltte who should be facing war crimes. for treating their own people badly. people in the camps are not imprisoned. Maybe the ltte who are hiding are considered as imprisoned. They are taking hidden action against their own people in the camps to make more misery. Sri Lanka is doing what is best for all the people. Doing only what's best for the LTTE (with ltte use of fear, suicide bombings) in fear of ltte kept the country poor. Also ltte didnt use the funds they extorted to help the tamil people. there is an evil purpose in the above article to spread misinformation and agitate people. the people are in the camps until resettlement, but what would ltte sympathizers who supported ethnically cleansing another group of people in Lanka know about that?

Anything that come out of the British press will be to divide and conquer  and bluster to cover up for history(how they ruined alot of places on earth with their narrow minded bigotedness and  regain any pride after being beaten, tarred and feathered by the Sri Lankans-mainly Sinhalese who protected their land.
