Tanker accident in Tokyo kills one and injures four.
One person was killed and four others injured after a tanker careered into the opposite lane of a Tokyo street, rolled over and hit four oncoming vehicles Friday afternoon, police said.
The accident occurred at around 2:40 p.m. on Friday, when the tanker driven by Hiroyuki Otomo, 33, veered into the opposite lane of the Kanjo Nanago street in Suginami-ku, and rolled over, local police said.
A van was crushed under the truck, killing Yuya Akimoto, 14, a junior high school boy sitting next to the driver and injuring his father, 38-year-old Hiromasa. Three other vehicles were also hit by the truck, injuring three people, including Hosei University Prof. Munetake Ichimura, 69.
Otomo told investigators that he hit the emergency brakes to avoid a car that crossed into his lane from the opposite lane, causing his truck to shoot into the opposite lane and roll over. Police suspect the offending vehicle was driven by Ichimura.
