This story is both shocking and heartbreaking.

Abraham K. Biggs, a Florida teenager, committed suicide on the live video streaming website Justin.tv — and the site's viewers encouraged him do it.

Why didn't site users help prevent this tragedy?

Abraham K. Biggs, 19 from Florida committed suicide live on Justin.tv Wednesday after being encouraged by viewers to do so.

The story as best we can follow it is that Biggs threatened to overdose on pills live on Justin.tv on a bodybuilding forum at bodybuilding.com. According to eyewitness reports, moderators didn’t believe him, and other users either on bodybuilding.com, Justin.tv or both egged him on to do it. Biggs, known as “candyjunkie” then posted a suicide note (copy here), downed a pile of pills then “went to sleep” all on camera. According to a report here, “he breathes for a few hours, people think he’s going to be alright and keep joking and trash talking him on Justin.tv”. Some time later people realize he was not moving, someone tracks down his details, calls police and paramedics, who then broke into his house to come to his aid…with that all being streamed live as well.

NewTeeVee has confirmed Biggs’ death with the Broward County medical examiner.

Mashable also has a detailed report on the circumstances surrounding Biggs' death:

Most of the participants, as well as the deceased Abraham K. Biggs, were denizens of steroid information forum bodybuilding.com. Biggs, also known as CandyJunkie on the forum and Feels Like Ecstasy on Justin.TV, is alleged to have been a “well known troll” on the forum. He created a thread in the “misc” category yesterday afternoon detailing the amount of drugs he’s going to take with the intention to kill himself.

The moderators of the forum didn’t take his threats seriously “on account of his past trolling,” and other forum members continue to egg him on. At that point, Biggs posted his suicide note, which conveyed a general sense of depression and disappointment with life, not necessarily motivated by any hardship or cyber-bullying he may have received online.

At that point, Biggs turned on his Justin.TV channel, took the pills and laid down to go to sleep on his bed. After an unspecified amount of time, one forum member in particular from India became concerned by Biggs’ lack of movement and hunted down the actual name and location. He then pleaded with the forum to call the Miami-Dade police department, but was met with cynical replies declining to intervene on account of his “troll status.”

After several unsuccessful emails by the forum member to Miami-Dade police, he borrowed his father’s mobile and spoke to a number of policemen who didn’t take the call seriously, but directed him to the Broward County Sheriff’s Department.

Approximately an hour later, Biggs’ door was busted down and BSO and paramedics arrived on the scene. After quickly confirming his status, covered the camera.

I agree with you please read my story that I wrote!

CanadianWoman responds to the recent on-line teen Suicide of Abraham Biggs in Miami, Florida

When Julie Desgrosseilliers learned through one of her students that a Florida nineteen year old had committed suicide on-line by drug overdose, she was utterly devastated.  Upon investigating, she found the article on-line.  After reading it, she was even more disturbed by the comments made by certain individuals who were aware that this unfortunate act was about to happen. She feels it is important to voice her opinion of how important it is in the world today to deal with teen issues when it comes to addressing: addiction, substance abuse and mental health.

“HOW COULD VIEWERS TAKE 12 HOURS TO ALERT POLICE? HOW COULD THEY MOCK HIM AND EGG HIM ON?” HOW COULD “Abraham Biggs lying motionless on his bed,” receive a response of “LOL” and “hahahah” while “observers cracked jokes”.

“There is no HUMAN way this happening should fall through the gaps of: the legal system; the addiction and mental health professionals; or the internet world, says Desgrosseilliers”.

In Canada, it is illegal to threaten to commit suicide. If Biggs’ means of committing suicide was a gun instead of pills would the response have been different? Would authorities been called sooner?  If the police were called sooner do you think Abraham Biggs would be alive today?

Apparently, Abraham Biggs previously threatened to commit suicide by posting a link on Justin.tv webcast. People, in general, do not threaten to end their life for no reason.  Biggs was “outgoing”, “family oriented” and “health-conscious”. How does one go from being this way to committing suicide? Biggs was “CRYING OUT FOR HELP and absolutely nothing was done about it until it was too late.  Some of the questions that come to mind are: Is it possible that Justin.tv used Biggs’ previous threat to commit suicide as a means to increase their hits? Were there any bets involved as to whether Biggs would commit suicide or not?  The pills Biggs took are not typically taken for Bipolar disorder.

As far as I’m concerned the website Justin.tv should take some responsibility for allowing this to take place.  If they are aware of how many hits they are receiving and they make a conscious effort to manage their site, than there definitely is some responsibility on their part to ensure that their site is not being used as an avenue for entertainment in an illegal fashion. Justin.tv’s Chief Executive stated that they want to “respect” the privacy of the broadcaster and his family. That may be so, however, it is possible that they also want to PROTECT their name/reputation.

It would be interesting to know what the President “Elect” Barack Obama thinks regarding this topic! What would his opinion be? Does he feel that Justin.tv website has the legal and moral responsibility to acknowledge this unfortunate incident and deal with it? What would his views be on today’s teens in their society committing suicide on-line and how would he propose to address this topic? It certainly would be an asset if he would be willing to offer some of his valuable time in addressing this particular matter.

An intervention should be required to be put in place to address what seems to be an on-going matter when it comes to teens, their mental health and their substance abuse in any country.

Desgrosseilliers states “I hope that a lawyer would step forward and help this family beyond the call of duty (PRO-BONO). There are many sites on-line showing that several lawyers receive more benefits, both professionally and personally, from helping families in need when finance resources are not available. Remember when anyone conducts an act of “GOOD FAITH”, the pay-off exceeds the monetary rewards and sometimes manifests into history.

This family is in desperate need of assistance legally and morally. Believe me, the Biggs family is not thinking about a lawsuit and how much money they may get.  But, I bet Justin.tv is worried about how much money they may stand to lose.  If Abraham Biggs`s family had to choose between money or having their son back which one do you think it would be?

In memory of Abraham Biggs, I will continue to use this unfortunate happening as a major topic in a classroom setting in order to educate future professionals on the reality of what is happening to our teens when it comes to addiction (drugs/computers) and mental health.  ABRAHAM BIGGS DESERVES CLOSURE AND SO DOES HIS FAMILY!

To those of you who “egged” Abraham Biggs on - SHAME ON YOU! You will have GRAVE difficulty forgetting this lesson, especially when you are on-line!

To those of you who tried to talk him out of it. Be proud of yourself! We are sorry your attempts were not successful!

To Justin.tv, if you want the hits on your website to skyrocket, take some responsibility for what has happened. Viewers will see that your site is one that does not close their eyes to illegal or immoral activity.

I have a passion for helping people who suffer from substance abuse and mental health issues and I will always extend my help professional and personally. I have seen a photo of Abraham. He was a very handsome young man. I’m sure he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Today, Abraham Biggs is no longer in our world! His family is grieving his absence! To the Biggs family, I would like to extend my deepest condolences.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU ABRAHAM BIGGS!
