Tesco ups Security as Recession Produces Cheese Thieves
Tesco, a leading supermarket in the United Kingdom is having to combat a new form of theivery within its shop. While alcohol and cds are traditionally the product of choice for thieves, Tesco is noticing that more and more thieves are stealing cheese.
According to the Telegraph, the metal strips normally reserved for products such as alcohol, razor blades and cds are now being places on food items such as cheese and steak.
The measures are currently being implemented in the Brockworth store in Gloucester, a small city in the Southwest of England but are likely to be implemented in other stores as well.
A spokesman said: "We expect crime to go up during the recession. Shops will look at this and step up security." A Tesco spokesman refused to discuss what rise in shoplifting there has been at the store in Brockworth, Gloucester.
The story has attracted interest from a number of UK national newspapers, the story providing a fresh insight into the effects on the recession on Britain.

Sort of makes sense... cheese is both relatively expensive in a grocery store and easy to conceal. (Please note that I do not condone wanton cheese theft)

Ha ha! Glad you put that disclaimer in! I remember reading that steak used to be a huge problem during the recession in the 80s and even as far back as the great depression. You're right though, cheese is quite expensive and I guess it isn't a necessity.

Are Tesco hiding the fact that they might have a big Mice problem?
Seriously, the Government need to tackle these cheeky low life thieves and chop off their left hand like they do in the Middle East. It will probably stop after that. They should save up for their cheese like everyone else. If they can't afford it and - tough cheese.
