AUSTIN, Texas – A group of Texas Democrats says Republican Gov. Rick Perry was reckless when he suggested at an anti-tax rally that fed-up Americans may one day want to secede from the United States. They said Thursday that he should disavow such talk. Democratic state Rep. Jim Dunnam of Waco says talk of secession is anti-American and that some people associate it with racial division and the Civil War.

Why is "Talk of secession is an attack on our country. It can be nothing else. It is the ultimate anti-American statement," Dunnam said at a news conference.
I disagree, if we can not talk about it or if it is bullied into silence by people like Dunnam then it may actually become a reality.
The US is only 233 years young and Countries much older and much more uniform have fallen apart over political differences.
The notions of secession and its right are imbedded into the US constitution. Some argue that even the Civil war was unconstitutional since any State has the right warranted with in the constitution to leave the Union of the USA at any time following due process.

I was actually talking to a friend today about the idea of succession. It is becoming apparent to me that our differences may well be irreconcilable and that maybe it is time to kiss this thing goodbye.
But two huge sub nations wouldn't work, I think. If you are going to do this, then do split it up into several smaller states wherein identities and beliefs can be somewhat consistent. Texas would be different than it's eastern neighbors, perhaps. Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia can do what they have got to do. Hell you don't even have to do this along state lines, since those would not be consistent with ideologies.
The only two other solutions I can think of are going back to the idea of a federation of states (i.e. the Articles of Confederation), wherein the national bond is much weaker and states' rights are supreme but the nation, at least in name, still exists.
Alternately we could all stop being nuts, stop hating each other for not having identical beliefs and opt to just get along. But somehow I just don't think humans are wired to do that.

God Bless Texas Governor Perry. Wish we had him for Governor of Tennessee!
His recent comments are not anti-American. What is anti-American are the weak, hypocritical, often deceitful, lying, cheating members of the U. S. Congress and Senate and all the pencil pushing bureacrats within the US government. They should all be disbanded and sent packing.
As they say history repeats itself and the "South will rise again". Thanks Texas for creating the discussion and hopefully the movement to start the succession process.

The federal government is out of control and does not reflect the wishes of its overtaxed constiquency. There is a move a foot for states to declare their sovereigncy. Texas has longtime been a sovereign state recently joined by Oklahoma and I just found out New Hamsphire. States are empowered to rule themselves by the constitution. I for one would be in favor of Texas succession from the union and the possibility of joining a coilition of other like- minded states. There are foreign countries that use the U.S. dollar for their official currency, case in point is Ecuador in South America, so I do not even see a need to issue a new state currency.
