Texas Governor's Mansion Burns; Arson Suspected
A pre-dawn fire that nearly destroyed the Texas Governor’s Mansion appears to have been intentionally set.
State Fire Marshal Paul Maldonado said Sunday that investigators have evidence the 152-year-old building was the target of an arsonist. They have made no arrests, and don’t have a suspect.
The damage from the blaze that swept through the Greek-revival house early on Sunday was described by officials as "bordering on the catastrophic".
No-one was in the 152-year-old mansion since it was undergoing restoration.
The Friends of the Governor's Mansion group says the building is the oldest, continually used executive residence west of the Mississippi River.
