Update: 4:10pm

The alert has now been canceled and the campus is back to normal. It is thought that the basis for the scare was a man carrying a replica rifle who was walking through Rudder Tower to get to his car and then he drove home.

Texas A&M Campus Has Been Placed On Alert After a Suspected Gunman Was Spotted on Campus

A Code Maroon message was sent out at about 4pm on Thursday October 28 after a bus driver said he spotted an armed individual at Rudder Tower and alerted campus police.

According to KBTX, the campus is not on lockdown, but students and staff are being warned to take shelter until further notice.

Scanner reports say the man the police are looking for is white, wearing an olive or green shirt and shorts, with a back pack and carrying an AK-47.

Shortly after the first sighting was reported, a second report was called of a gunman on the West Campus, but police do not have a description of that person.

The following Code Maroon message was sent out at 4 p.m.:

"Code Maroon: Sighting of armed subject at Rudder Tower. SEEK SAFE SHELTER until further notice."

In what may be a coincidence, former President George H.W. Bush, Barbara Bush, and former First Lady Laura Bush are due to be at the George Bush Presidential Library, which is located on the west campus, on Thursday night as they are opening the Heart Truth Red Dress Exhibit.

They are due to start the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5pm, but it is not known if the two occurrences are related or where the former president and his family are at this time.

Apparently the College Station SWAT team has been mobilized, but we will bring you more information when it becomes available.
