Pencils, rulers, Text books, and a Glock handgun will be among the implements Texas teachers will be, "Packing" for the new school year beginning August 25th.  After much negotiation it was found that teachers may be more helpful; to protect students fro danger by having a weapon on their person.

When classes start Aug. 25 in the tiny Harrold school district, there will be one distinct difference from years prior: Some of the teachers may have guns.

To deter and protect against school shootings, trustees have altered district policy to allow employees to carry concealed weapons if they have a state permit and permission from the administration. The 110-student district lies 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth on the eastern end of Wilbarger County, near the Oklahoma border.

More than a dozen state legislatures have considered making it legal to carry guns on college campuses, but experts and officials contacted by the Star-Telegram say the move is unheard of in elementary or secondary schools.

Superintendent David Thweatt said a main concern was that the small community is a 30-minute drive from the sheriff’s office, leaving students and teachers without protection.

'To be prepared’

The district’s lone campus sits 500 feet from heavily trafficked U.S. 287, which could make it a target, Thweatt said.

I think this is good news: School campuses in one Texas district will no longer be self-protection-free zones. The district has approved rule changes allowing teachers to carry guns:

Now, that’s an “example for the nation.”

Texas School District Will Let Teachers Carry Guns

A tiny Texas school district may be the first in the nation to pass a law specifically allowing teachers and staff to pack heat when classes begin later this month.

Trustees at the Harrold Independent School District approved a district policy change last October so employees can carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings, provided the gun-toting teachers follow certain requirements.

Superintendent David Thweatt told FOXNews.com the policy was initiated because of safety concerns.

"We have had employees assaulted before by people in the last several years," Thweatt said. "I think that safety is big concern. We are seeing a lot of anger in society."

He wouldn't comment further on the nature of the assaults.

The Texas superintendent linked gun-free zones with the uprising of school shootings in recent years.

"Now, that’s an “example for the nation.”"

From the outside looking in to the US, this development shows a society, in great distress. So many aspects of American culture have been embraced around the world, let's hope America's gun culture is rejected.

I'm not convinced that arming up teachers is such a hot idea. It further normalizes the appearance of guns in schools, while not presenting a credible threat to violent students. What, is my math teacher gonna get in a shootout? Kids know that teachers are not going to shoot them. Teachers can get sued for so much as touching students in a threatening way, so I think we can all agree that busting caps is out of the question.

Not going far enough IMO, they should issue tasers to all school employees including janitors.  Then they could shock the kids if they don't get homework done, or make a mess on the floor, or sass back, or well, anything they do that the adults don't like!  You don't have to instill values  if you can instill fear, right?  Why earn respect if you can be feared?
