NP Rank:
Thaksin Shinawatra - gotcha!
So Thaksin has finally got his come-uppance from Her Britannic Majesty's Government!
And a real slap in the chops it is!
According to today's Bangkok Post (and probably all the other newspapers in Bangkok that support the Peoples' Alliance for Democracy), the British Embassy in Thailand has revoked his visa, effectively banning him and his wife, Khunying Potjaman, from entering Britain on their Thai passports. The British have also circulated airlines that are members of the Airport Operations Committee.
The letter made it clear that the visas issued to the couple were no longer valid and the illustrious couple should be prevented from boarding planes to Britain. Why? Because he has a prison sentence waiting for him in Thailand and known criminals are not wanted by Her Majesty!
There will be many cheers in Thailand today.
Personally, I am delighted since I never liked the guy! A little like Dubya, he has done huge damage to Thailand. He is enormously wealthy thanks to his corrupt crony connections. He never made his money through hard work work or smart thinking. He was never much of a role model. His attempts to clean up the drugs trade in Thailand was flawed from the start. He should have been tougher with Burma, the country that manufactured the yabaa. Instead, he encouraged the police (where he used to work) to shoot first and plant the drugs later, accusing the victims rather than the suppliers. And the present government has just announced a similar crack-down on drugs in the North of Thailand.
True, he has done good things for the poor of Thailand, eking out a living as best they can. But even there, his policies of financial support for poor people were badly thought out. There was no clear definition of poverty to define who was eligible for any handouts. It was left to people themselves to make claims and to risk the embarassment of being turned away - a good technique if you want to discourage poor people from claiming.
Also, his policy of cheap medical care soon ran out of funding since it was poorly calculated. Some hospitals risked being bankrupted as a result.
Of course, it will not mean much to the Thaksin family.
They will be welcomed in the Bahamas; or they have been invited to go to Africa (not that they are very likely to accept that invitation).
Since addressing the crowd of supporters at Rajamangala Stadium last weekend, it is thought that the couple left Hong Kong for China, although no one is sure.
It is embarassing to be turned away from the United Kingdom.
But then, Thaksin is used to embarassing events.

Since Taksin was ousted as PM, hard drugs have become easily available and once again young kids or teenagers from other towns can purchase drugs like buying lolly pop elsewhere too.
Most Thais agree or even have same views or questions or even get the same answers.. Why they want to be politicians?? What will they get? And do they really want to help the country or take advantages from it? This is still a question, to which we all know the answer. Furthermore, the crucial question we all also know the answer is....who will not become corrupt, if they are a politician??? As long as they corrupt but help to develop and lead the country up to same international standard of both economics and living standards as other leading countries. To achieve that goal government must support the poor to have the same educational opportunities as others.
Ousted Thailand's PM is definitely not a perfect human being; I am positive that no one is, but he at least has stopped mafias, drug dealers; and tried to help poor people have a higher standard of living.
These are just my views about the deposed PM. You are not the best Taksin, but you are a lot better than most Thai Politicians and people behind the curtains!

Please disregards the previous one..
I am one of those Thais who are pretty sick of Thai politics. I have not really cared about Thai politics at all for as long as I can remember since I was born in Klongtoey Slum in Bangkok, Thailand. I have seen junkies and heroin dealers (now many of them are in prison still).
Even young kids had to work for their parents or relatives delivering drugs; some are already addicted to Heroin and their parents did not even send them to school for a chance of a better future!
I personally do not know Taksin at all, but while he was Thailand's PM he had done lots of good things for the poor and at least many drugs dealers were apprehended by the police; moreover he had also supported poor students who achieve higher grade point average by offering scholarship for overseas education.
