That'll do Nancy Grace--That'll do
IOWA CITY - I was slow to write this piece because I'm afraid doing so would only rake muck in what is already a filthy mess. HLN (formerly CNN Headline News) has never been a bastion of solid TV journalism. Filling the 24 hour news cycle with fluff pieces and tabloid-style news, HLN acted as a sort of catch-all for news pegs deemed unfit for its sister network, CNN.
So criticizing HLN for its quality of content might be unfair. Consumers wanted tabloid news. CNN, a business as well as a news institution, delivered. If Pulitzer-prize caliber journalism is what's desired, one can always pick up a copy of the LA Times or The Washington Post. After all, HLN was never designed to be the city on the hill for cable news networks. It was designed to be the opposite--entertaining. When I was fortunate enough to speak to Washington Post reporter Robert Pierre about this phenomenon earlier this winter, he summed it up beautifully. "Everybody watches for a train wreck."
But what do we do when HLN begins to move away from the idea of 'news as entertainment,' and begins to enter into the realm of the revolting?
For eight months, former prosecutor Nancy Grace has covered, almost obsessively, the Caylee Anthony murder investigation on her self-titled HLN show. Plenty has been written about Grace to be sure, but such commentary often quickly devolves into ad hominem attacks.
What makes this situation so startling is not necessarily the show's coverage, but the false pretenses that attempt to mask the rampant exploitation. The idea that Grace is some empathetic crusader of justice bent on maintaining a superior moral high ground is consistently shoved down the viewer's throat. Yet, it's clear after only a few minutes of watching her television show that there's something much more disturbing taking place.
A toddler has been murdered, and it has been paying Grace's bills for the better part of a year. Commercial breaks are preceded by intimate home video and photos of the now-deceased toddler, backed by a music track fit for Schindler's List. Old behind-the-bars video footage of murder suspect Casey Anthony, the toddler's mother, repeats endlessly as Grace carries out her interviews and monologues. Photo slide shows of the deceased toddler play out in whatever space not already reserved for the litany of talking heads brought onto the show each night--eight months and counting.
Bombshell. Breaking news. This just in. Regardless of what minute detail has come to surface regarding the murder investigation, Grace never misses an opportunity to sensationalize it under the guise of empathy or outrage. The pejorative media phenomenon known as missing white woman syndrome has met its match, and all it took was a toddler.
What prompted this piece was a photo I snapped that, at first, caused me to laugh at the sheer ludicrousness of it all. As time went by, it became increasingly clear to me that this isn't just sensationalism--it's absolutely deplorable.

I absolutely hate Nancy Grace, with a passion - I can't even hear her voice, I have to turn the channel over.
I think she has real potential as she has quite an interesting background that would allow her to add her expertise to these cases and maybe actually make a difference. But, as you said, she just uses sensationalism and attacks to turn the whole thing into a farce. If I was a member of the Anthony family, I would have bitten back by now; I wouldn't have been able to contain myself.

Yes, enough already! I had to watch it every night while visiting my mom last summer. Always Caylee - quite morbid, really. I like to think the only reason she'd watch it was because there was nothing else on at that time, in that time zone.

I am with you, Drew, and you, AmyJudd. I can't stand her. The epitome of what goes wrong with her was the Duke lacrosse team's being falsely accused of rape.
There were three women who would not yield on this: Nancy Grace; Gloria Allred; Wendy Murphy.
Malkin accused Murphy of being "the last person in America to belive the charges". There she was with the good company of Nancy Grace and Gloria Allred.

Drew, you have my vote. Anyone who is disappointed with any mainstream journalist shares my sentiments precisely. Sorry bunch of folks, actually.

I don't watch this crap. Maybe we should watch it long enough to find out who the advertisers are and write them, threatening boycott of their products.

Wish I had seen this sooner. These sensational titles she gives to her current target and incessantly repeats, like "tot mom" and the continual complete annihilation of her own guests if they stray from the theme or disagree with her is unbelievable. The sensationalism is so over the top I find it hard to believe that anyone takes this seriously but I suppose that some do. To me it is not unlike Jerry Springer. A train wreck that is hard to ignore. One of her routine panel members just got a show preceding hers on HLN. So I guess someone is watching.

I thought that I was alone. Thank goodness that I happened accidently to find this page.
I haven't watched the Nancy Grace show for a while, as I got too upset. I can't believe how rude she was (or is) to her panel, if they do not 100% agree with her. Why they keep coming back is beyond me.
While I want to know the latest news of Caylee and Haleigh, HLN seems to be taking it a bit to far...first Mike then Jane and finally Grace. Endlessly Grace.

Watch something else on TV if you don't like Nancy Grace. I happen to like Nancy very much and I want to know what's going on with the murder of little Caylee Anthony. No one else has had bounty hunter Leonard Padilla on or the other attorneys that give their opinions. I'll keep watching Nancy, I think she's great!
