These are Christians, right?

I oft wonder about the US religious right - from the heady days when they helped the Hollywood actor into power to watching them on TV today crying because one of their member has been caught out as being something horrid, like being gay, having sex or covering up that one of their daughters is having a baby out of wedlock.

U.S. social and religious conservatives will be searching for someone to fill that void as they gather in Washington this Friday to Sunday for the fourth annual summit of self-styled "Values Voters."

Dubbed the "Religious Right," they have been stirred by a summer of discontent when their activists went on the offensive against Democratic President Barack Obama's top domestic priority of healthcare reform

Is it so bad for them now that they have to go 'shopping' for a new leader? The GOP/Republicans?Con-servatives have no leader that many can see. Steele? No, certainly not.

To give them a taste of their particular hell I would make a few of them live in Europe and see how the olde worlde do things - in Europe it's called being civilised - in the US, well - what can you call it? Single issues matter more than the care and health of the vast population of the US, but with an 'ultra-Liberal' in the White House that doesn't matter one jot.

Though the president is probably more Christian than those who claim to follow Christ - they still see the political aim as a fulfilment. You cannot have a Democrat in office for a Democrat just may work for all of the US population and not just those in the South, Bible-belt, or Conservatives.

They have felt the awesomeness of power, and like many of their telly evangelists screeching some obscure message and begging for another 20 million dollars to build a new mansion. Of course it is not for them to live in - it is just an asset that they can add to the Church's portfolio - did any of them do history at school?

That I very much doubt. Why? Well they would see that this religious mania was dealt a blow way back when the first puritans and other religious travellers travelled across the sea for religious freedom - and the Catholic Church murdered many because of heresy.

I do watch a couple of the 'vangelists on TV, purely for the entertainment value! If they were not religious folk they should be in the entertainment business - I am sure they would make a killing in it.

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, who lit up the party's Southern base last year when she ran for vice president as Senator John McCain's running-mate, will not attend, which will disappoint some in attendance. Polls consistently show she remains a favorite among conservatives.

That must be a bonus - because if she did no doubt her face would be splattered across the news channels hourly.

Being a Christian is all about helping the poor - a guy called Jesus said that, a lot! Yet - Social Conservatives, or as I prefer to call them, religious whack-jobs - don't care for the poor, just the power and money that comes with it.

They will be a little ticked off whence they reach the pearly gates and St Peter lets in a young woman who died after a coat-hanger abortion goes horribly wrong.

Of senators, in airport bathroom stalls doing the reach around looking for that elusive square, while stretching his legs out offering free Baloney Pony Rides to all comers!

Thanks, TC.  Don't go to Washington, this weekend!

WRONG.

Christians are those who follow the teaching of Christ.

Bigots are those who smear an entire group because of a few.

Obama is a Christian.

For the religous right to be following the teachings of Christ it would require:

1. That they stop demeaning gays and other minorities based on those dscrepancies which make them a minority. Jesus said to love and accept everyone in addition to refraining from judgement.

2. That they stop calling (even if in cowardly/indirect allusions) for physical harm to Terrorists, the President, and anyone who disagrees with them.

3. That they stop condoning torture and the situation at Gitmo. It never should have been allowed to go as far as it has.

4. That they stand up to the fringe by which they are characterized. If religious figures do not wish to be seen as judgemental hypocrites they must eradicate all basis for such a claim. Stand up to the ministers and members who call for courses of action in stark contrast to Christian doctrine. Not only will that garner respect to and for those who choose to do so, it will enable others to see their religion in a more positive light.
