Washington D_C Tea Party march protest September 12, 2009 Freedom Plaza part 1 one

Protesters numbering in the tens of thousands showed up in Washington  D.C. this Saturday for an anti-government/anti-Obama rally. The numbers took authorities by surprise.

The theme of the protest was the general distrust of government,  the Obama administration, and the belief that the U.S. government is exceeding its constitutional authority. Specific concerns were voiced about  proposed health care legislation, taxes, gun rights, the deficit, and illegal immigrants.

The protesters comprised  Republicans, libertarians, independents and former Democrats. One protester held up a sign calling President Obama the “parasite in chief.” And several protesters held up signs saying “Bury Obama Care with Kennedy".

A school teacher from Florida, who attended the rally said that she believes the government has violated the constitution and that the protest is not a Republican or Democratic issue.

WASHINGTON — A sea of protesters filled the west lawn of the Capitol and spilled onto the National Mall on Saturday in the largest rally against President Obama since he took office.

The demonstrators numbered well into the tens of thousands, though the police declined to estimate the size of the crowd. Many came on their own and were not part of an organization or group. But the magnitude of the rally took the authorities by surprise.

“I want Congress to be afraid,” said Keldon Clapp, 45, an unemployed marketing representative who recently moved to Tennessee from Connecticut after losing his job. “Like everyone else here, I want them to know that we’re watching what they’re doing. And they do work for us.”

Protesters came  from Texas and Tennessee, New Mexico and New Hampshire, Ohio and Oregon. The messages on their signs told of an intense distrust of the government.

In conversations with demonstrators, people identified themselves as Republicans, libertarians, independents and former Democrats. Several speakers denounced the Obama administration’s health care plan as “socialism.”

Ruth Lobbs, 57, a schoolteacher from Jacksonville, Fla., said she flew to Washington on Saturday to protest how she believes the government has violated the Constitution.

“It’s more than Obama — this isn’t a Republican or a Democratic issue,” Ms. Lobbs said as she held a yellow flag that declared, “Don’t Tread on Me.”

Did you mean peoples? The interesting thing about this particular rally is the lack of organization and the fact that many Americans weren't prodded to attend and simply took it upon themselves to do so. Obviously they're concerned enough about their government's direction to make the effort to fly in to D.C. from all parts of the country.

If we have an administration that is exceeding the constitutional authority alotted to it now, what did we have when either Lincoln or FDR were in office? What about Bush-- isn't torture and wiretapping without warrants contrare to the Constitution?

2
Rory Cripps

Absolutely Grace! Lincoln, FDR, Woodrow Wilson, et al. all exceeded their constitutional authority. I'd let Lincoln slide on that one though because of the dire circumstances. Wilson's presiding over the establishment of the Federal Reserve . . . JEEZ! I bet Andrew Jackson was turning over in his grave after that one. FDR's court-packing! Wow! As to Bush's wiretapping and torture . . . all that I can say is that he didn't do anything different from what most U.S. presidents condoned beginning with George Washington (as it applies to torture), and what FDR condoned as it applies to both torture and wire-tapping. Many Americans, nowadays, are well -informed and they're getting hip to some of the tricks that their government was able to pull off in days gone by. Have you seen the opinion polls re. The Congress lately? I bet that at least 60% of the protesters that attended Saturday's rally don't have a good word to say about Bush and virtually all of them don't have a good word to say about President Obama. And  all of them have nothing but utter contempt for the U.S. Congress and Senate.

Even GE/NBC Universal had guts enough to broadcast "hundreds of thousands" and they are not noted for hyperbole when it comes to events that may harm the parent company's agenda.

Best setteled estimate I've seen is around 1.2 million citizens stood up and marched against the direction this One-Party leadership, during the initial phases of the 44th Presidency, wants to take the country.

Edmund: Thanks for the info! When I wrote this story earlier today there seemed to be some confusion over the numbers that attended the rally. I saw some estimates in the million range but the NY Times reported "tens of thousands". I stuck to that figure, however I'll update it when we get a few more estimates.

The highest and most consistent estimates i have found were between 60 and 70 thousand.

Boy I wish I got a chance to do an op ed on this, Obamas ears would be burning.,

Bottom line, politicians can never be trusted to look out for you! Peroid!

I can't understand what is really happening in the US right now.  Is the unrest really based on the collapse of the economy?

I don't see any way for Obama to be re-elected.  People (generally-speaking) don't like him as much.  He's losing his fans daily.  Get ready for Bobby Jindal 2013-2021:  The next Reagan.

I am with you RoyC... Obama places more concern on the Health Care issue than on the real issues of jobs, and stabilizing the Real Estate market.  Who cares what government can do. They usually screw things up big time.. Now if Obama recognized that if half of the Military spending spent on weapons is used to care for peoples health and education instead of planning to kill the people.....we would have a real chance to balance things for the people. But he does nothing to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and cut Military spending. He also encourages Private Mercenary Contractors.. He is without a real clue to the American people.

People voted for Obama to end the war...and keep power away from the Republican dupes who did 911, and  took us to war...because of the fall of Enron....and the connection Enron had to Lehman Brothers eventual demise.

Obama has been that wedge...and only wedge...because he is either really blind and stupid, or scared as hell winding up like JFK or MLK. ...and is why he plays his puppet President routine... We know he is acting and not doing what is right... The good American people see right through him...and is why they gathered. Mark my words he will not win in the next election...

There is one thing he did do well but really not enough... is  his tarriff on China Tires... It's about time the US did something to counter China. Now China is crying Protectionism....which is furthest from the truth. China has kept American firms out of China for years. Just because KFC, McDonalds, and Pizza Hut are here...they are franchises owned by chinese. Walmart is really a chinese store with an American name....There are no American businesses free to operate in China selling American goods in China. Now that is protectionsim at its finest by China... in practice.

Harmonious Society to them means keeping out Americans....to push their discriminatory Chineseness.

It has only been 8 months, people.  Obama is an Intelligent and Thinking man.  You are all failing miserably to see the long-term.  Obama is trying to do it RIGHT, not Quick band-aids.  There is a lot to do and it has to be done right this time.  There are a lot of factors on economic recovery.  Health Care is a big part of the budget of everyone, including federal.  So, yes, there is a spotlight on Health Reform.  He is not ignoring other things and if you pay attention you might could see that.

Stop this culture of ME! NOW! and pay some attention... or try.. .turn off the x-box, playstation, tv... whatever... and pay some attention.

Graywalker: You make some good points in my opinion, especially when you said, "There are a lot of factors on economic recovery." And it is true that President Obama has only been in office for a relatively short time. But many voters nowadays have had it with politicians. And it didn't start with President Obama. Indeed, many conservatives were railing against Bush when he entered his second term, but we didn't hear too much about it. Today, voter frustrations have come to a head, and at this point  it's anyone's guess as to the outcome of the 2010 Congressional races. Traditionally, the President's party typically loses congressional seats.

You want us to pay attention, when the Demoncrats and Reaperublicans can't pay our or control our deficit spending? I find it laughable... Who isn't paying attention are the same who aren't paying period....unless its my money they use..We have been looking at this for a very long term.....as far back as when they dropped the Atomic Bombs on Japan.  Stop the culture of me.....well tell that to Obama..... If he is so intelligent why did it take him or us over 200 years to finally have a Black American as President? Frankly I have no trust or confidence in the birdbrain leaders we get stuck with......and call that a Democrat or Republic process.  I have no x-box, playstation, or whatever.....all I have is common sense.....good sense....

I really don't see what the hell his direction is. He has no game plan in Afghanistan. What is he planning on doing? Make Afghanistan the new New York State? What? Create more and more economic activity to speed up the global warming problem? He says nothing about the world and nations in controlling birth control.

China and India are case in point. These people are sick wacked out of control culture idiots humping each other and popping out baby after baby thinking there is no worry about the need for human population control.

Here we are fighting for Oil resources...while doing nothing to put a halt to the out of control birthing of nations increasing in size faster than an economy can grow...or a GDP can produce.

It is getting crazier and crazier...and the next war won't be about getting resources, but killing people simply to have a place to sit and a space to breathe.

You may think this is an exaggeration...but I am telling you if they are still fighting over land rights in Israel and Palestine for over 60 years...how can it not be real in the high populated countries like China and India.?  China has to be one of the most screwed up places on the planet, with its screwball one country two systems problems in Hong Kong, to Taiwan, to Tibet, and the continued Urumqi XinJiang riots.

All they do is party and squander....and talk about how great they are in comparison in other countries such as China vs. America.....and they continue screwing and stealing leading the world to where? Absolutely no where. The more happy they are..the more they party and have more babies. It is a major problem.

I can see Obama's health care plan taking care of that? Totally impossible and insane. One of the greatest things that will happen with his healthcare plan is more and more people will be going to the hospitals. And guess who goes to hospitals? Thieves....targeting the sick, stealing their stuff. Crap it happened to me today.

My knee really is aching from all the work I did in carrying all the tile up to my house, carrying all the cement bags, and a truck load of sand that they dumped out front, in which I had to shovel into buckets and carry up into the house to be used in the flooring. I had a reuseable grocery bag and inside I had a large carton of yogurt and a special type of coconut...that I was bringing to my wife. Well in my agony waiting for the doctor...the chinks got their kid to play in front of me, taking away my attention, while they went into my bag and stole my special coconut. I am really astounded that these people will steal from me in the hospital.. Low life SOB's..I think......

I guess after this happened I realized how insecure Hospitals are. There are no security cameras to watch for thieves...or to think if a Chinese security guard would give a crap if he saw another Chinese stealing stuff out of a foreigners bag. You know there are a multitude of things that happen in hospitals that are not taken toward established security. Nurses that steal drugs, or dilute drugs. Or you buy drugs and they don't give them to me...but to another patient...while saying my problem needs to seek further treatment so they can suck more money out of me... It is a major f-job if you ask me.....What to do?  And to think going back to the US would be any different?

My life has to be the most insecure senseless body of bones on the planet....and we are pandemic on sending our military into other countries to kill people to bring them our madness of unresolved hope of insecurity?  Maybe this is insanity.... Hope you are paying attention here.

Really I'm a man without a country. What would you do? If you really believe in God, and you know the US government did 911 killing fellow Americans, blaming foreigners to wage war, how does it make sense to stay in the USA? You never come clean from the corrupt system. You have to work and pay taxes to the War machine. To come to China, and go through the suffering in not understanding a word anyone says for a number of years. If that is not torture I think waterboarding might be a dip in the pool for me to say the least. Then we listen to a New Hope from Obama the first Black Presidental Candidate who says he will end the war...and do the right things....to get no more of his talk on campaign promises...but a silent guy...who really is and appears to be reneging on his promises....becoming the promised change is nothing but another lie.

God I firmly believes in suffering...more than being on our side to make things right. Case in point is Patrick Swazye who just passed away.....And to think his passing will be a positive note for the Obama Healthcare plan...because the Private Companies failed to find a cure to pancreatic cancer?  And it is the Private Companies who claim to carry the torch for research...

God Bless Patrick.

Catch 22

I just found this site and must say that while I don't agree with lots of statements made here, most people seem to be at least sincere and concerned and sane.  That's all I'll say for now so as not to screw it up,.

A FOX NEWS POLL Said 80% said they approved of their current healthcare plan and 20% didn't. Some Say.  He is holding up the HEALTHCARE SIGN to get the CITIZENS concentration on that. Instead of other things this administration is doing, such as trying to pass bills to give UNCONSTITUTIONAL Presidential Powers to this Administration. And more that doesn't serve the Citizens well.  Very Concerned  Independent Citizen of The United States of America      THINK ABOUT IT   Please   Whats Next?   The Citizens are the BOSSES and they are our EMPLOYEES.

A few comments regarding QueensHart's list:The U.S. Post Office is great and it is not "broke"!  For 44 cents I can get a letter delivered in one or two days anywhere in  the country.  Packages may take 2-4 days.  In my entire adult life (and I am 62) I have had only one piece of mail go missing.  I call that a bargain even if they do have to raise the price of a stamp every few years.  The price of everything thing else goes up.  Why not stamps?Social Security is not broke and its future can be easily secured if we as Americans continue to deem it worth supporting with our tax dollars.  Ditto for Medicare (and Medicaid).  My parents are surviving on SS and a small pension.  Life before Social Security for the non-wealthy elderly was a terrifying prospect.  My father would have died long ago if it weren't for Medicare.  As a retired factory worker he could never have afforded the surgery that saved his life.Cash for Clunkers did not go broke.  It was established as a program with a fixed amount of dollars.  It was in fact wildly successful and the money was used just as intended. The War on Poverty has kept millions of poor from homelessness, hunger and death from easily treatable illnesses which was often the fate of the poor before the program began.  Did they get every single thing right from the beginning?  Certainly not but that's to be expected with such an ambitious and noble effort and improvements can always be made as we learn more.As to the financial institutions you mention, their failures as well as the failures of private banks have been caused by the undue influence of corporations and banks on our legislators.  If anyone has a solution for that please get busy promoting it.As for government paid health care...My son, whose wife is pregnant with their second child, recently lost his job which means he lost his insurance.  My sister's husband was forced into early retirement and although she works she does not have employee insurance.  They pay over $14,000 per year for basic health insurance, a real hardship.  And much, much worse stories about lack of health care abound in our great nation.  In any other developed country these kinds of situations would not happen because they consider basic health care to be a human right.  Their systems can't be too bad as they all have longer life expectancies than Americans do.What's your vision of what life should be like in America?  "Every man for himself?"  As for me, I gladly pay my taxes to help those not as blessed as I am and for my own security as well.  I know the government isn't always as efficient as we would wish it to be but then neither are most private institutions.I, like many others, am often disappointed or angered by things our government does at the city, state and federal level but I still believe it is our best way of joining together as citizens to make life better for all.

There were hundreds of thousands on 9/12, not tens of thousands, not millions like british press said. Can't anyone get it to the right power of ten? :PMy mathematical friend calculated the crowd numbers using two different methods and two different videos of the crowd, and both times came up with estimates ranging from 300k to 500k. Even fox news said tens of thousands. It's weird.
