Thousands cross lagoon escaping LTTE grip amidst Fire
Thousands of civilians have crossed over to safety, the Military and UN officials confirm.
COLOMBO (Reuters) – Thousands of civilians under rebel fire waded across a lagoon to escape Sri Lanka's war zone, where government forces have surrounded Tamil Tiger separatists for the final battle of a 25-year conflict, the military and a U.N. official said.
The military said aerial surveillance footage confirmed an exodus of around 5,000 people from a tiny, sandy coastal strip, where the United States and others say the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are holding thousands by force.
Meanwhile the Ministry of Defence says that an explosion was heard from the NFZ and thick black smoke was observed.
a huge explosion has been reported in the civilian safety zone where the LTTE leaders are currently hiding in. According to the reports, the soldiers have heard the explosion around 6.30 P.M , after which they have observed thick black smoke rising above 200m from the ground. Following the explosion, all radio communications among the LTTE units have come to a standstill, the reports added.
Reports from 59 Division said that 4 civilians were killed and 14 others suffers serious injuries when the terrorists opened fire at them as they sought refuge with the soldiers.
Sri Lanka Air force has airlifted 12 of the injured to the government hospital Anuradhapura.

Thanks for the video Sathyajith.
Glad that so many people managed to escape. Can say one thing with certainty, these people will never forgive the LTTE as long as they live. We also have to let them know the truth about who cheered for LTTE and waved the Tiger flags while they were going through hell at the hands of LTTE.
at 20:47 on May 14th, 2009
.... must add, who cheered for LTTE while the people of Sri Lanka (all Sinhala, Muslim, Tamil people) did all they could to help the IDPs with food, milk powder, clothes, medicine, water, books, etc. collection centers all over the country.

The advancing Army heard huge explosions in the area where the LTTE leadership is hiding followed by thick black smoke seen rising up on the ground. They said after that LTTE radio communication went silent.
Specially in conventional warfare, when the defending troops (in this case, terrorists) know that their position/s will be overrun by the enemy, they destroy equipment/documents etc which would be vital to the enemy. As per the report, if the LTTE radio communications have gone silent, it can be assumed that the end is very near. Normally, the communications set up is the last to go.
Or, it may be that the brave Prabhakaran, strapped himself with the "mother of all suicide bombs" and blew himself up in the same way he got many terrorist cadres to do.
I visualize that all equipment other than the weapons and ammo, if the terrorists have decided to stand and fight will be remaining now. All the other stuff would have been disposed of by way of exploding them.
Wonder what happened to all those Cyanide vials? Any guesses?

Thank you Lalith for that information - so that means nothing is known yet as to what the explosion was?
Are there LTTE cadres still fighting?

"Or, it may be that the brave Prabhakaran, strapped himself with the "mother of all suicide bombs" and blew himself up in the same way he got many terrorist cadres to do."
Would'nt it take a nuke to blow that venerable body made out pure diasporan fed fat and ghee..!!?? Since he is in much love with his own self, it is unlikely that he would do such a thing.
I hope he gets caught alive this time.

Yes.
They have to fire right round because they are surrounded now. Brigadier Prasanna De Silva advanced his Division from the South, thus completing the encirclement.
As the Govt troops are very close to the terrorists, advance by day becomes more and more difficult, specially because of sniper fire and fire from the terrorists who are more or less static and behind some sort of cover. The SL forces are on the move, exposed to the enemy. I foresee more dawn and dusk advances. However, the SL forces know what they are doing and I think the war is almost over.
Normally, flammable liquids, petroleum products and also plastics produce black smoke. In general, a hotter fire will convert more fuel into elemental carbon, which forms into tiny particles that absorb light and appear in the sky as black smoke. This is how we see black smoke when a car catches fire.
Perhaps, they are exploding their fuel stock or vehicles.(Where can Prabha's Limo go now?)
Regarding as to what the explosion was: Not yet. But we will know very soon.
Hope this helps.

Update:
SKR reported on Rupavahini that 3 female suicide cadres who were sent forward to blow themselves up among Army and escaping civilians have surrendered instead of blowing up.
He also reported that Military suspects LTTE may have sent some of those Civilians who escaped, willingly. Those who were close to LTTE may have been sent willingly, while the innocents may have been kept with them - a suspicion due to the fact that most civilians who came today seemd well fed and don't seem to have suffered.
at 00:38 on May 15th, 2009
SKR also reported that some civilians have said they haven't tried to escape before because they were hoping to get their children who are child soldiers back from the LTTE all this time. But now they have given up that hope, they have said.

Good one, Hiranya.
There are LTTE cadres who were active LTTE cadres amongst the IDPs. This is why every displaced person have to be thoroughly investigated before clearing them as a non Terrorist Civilian.
As of now, there are many ex? LTTE cardres who have confessed to 'have been' active terrorist members.

"who have confessed "
Hmm..!
Expecting some loud-writing on these words..! Come 'aan..!

Yes Lalith. We have understood that reality always. Once the screening is over, things can get back to normal. I hope soon.

Not only IDPs, I think countries like Canada, UK, Australia should start investigating on the people who were openly protesting, not for IDPs, but to protect LTTE by waving the LTTE flags.
Some of them might be innocent, however it is highliy likely that the organisers of those events to have a direct link with LTTE and even with other terrorist organisations. I do not have facts to prove this statement, it is just that what I think as a possibility given the scale of funding, arms smuggling, media support, europian political backing that these people had.
Also SOME of the europian politicians may have strong backing from these terrorist groups by way of funding political campaigns and personal business interests. Within next few days, we'll see the end of war in Sri Lanka, will that mean it will end in west? These people will try something out in Europe to find ways to fund terrorism, probably in Europe and Canada.
Toronto could be a great target for Tamils to make the next homeland claim because the tamils who have migrated by various ways to Canada, most of them are strong Ealam supporters.
Since they have sacrificed generations by supporting LTTE for this and failed, now they will look in to other options. It is highly likely that the plans are already in place. It is difficult to do this in India, Sri Lanka without taking arms because of the way south asian politics work. It is too hard and any funding towards this will be a waste for tamils because even they find a breakthrough with one south asian government, things can change with the next government that comes to power.
I would also think and feel it is not the same in western countries. Tamil Ealam supporters can always find a way and once you win your rights, it is secured. It is like Asylam Seekers. All they have to do is to somehow step in to these countries. They get all facilities, benefits and the life is secured more than anywhere in the world.
Just my thinking only. Don't ask me to provide facts to prove my claims.

Shame on you David Wright Miliband, Shame on you!!! Look at what you have done? You knew this is coming and you were pushing UN to pressure the Sri Lankan government to stop the bloody war instead of you pushing YOUR LTTE contacts in Europe, Canada, US and Australia to release the civilians and to surrender. You spent your time on flying around, calling your LTTE connections like Pathmanadan (KP) and plotting plans to somehow stop the final attack. Do you have children? How can you sleep when you know that you did the wrong thing and supported terrorists to hold the civilians to die with them? It is estimated still over 1000 innocent civilians are trapped and the LTTE will go for a suicide mission with these people so that it can make a case at least to win some sympathy for this wasteful war. Yes, those innocent civilians will go to history as the price paid to end this bloody conflict for generations to come. LTTE used them for 30 years and don't they deserve at least a chance to live? Your governments are playing this game in Middle East, Africa, Iraq, and Afghanistan and now in Sri Lanka. How do you feel now Milliband? Do you want to stop this war now and allow LTTE to regroup? Talk.. Speak the truth.. at least now. Shame on you and you could have saved these people if you did the right thing. You didn't and you played your political game. Once this war ends, Sri Lankans should declare a 7 day period to remember all soldiers who sacrificed and all innocent Tamil civilians who sacrificed for the betterment of future generations. You David Milliband.. go and find another conflict to play your dirty war games.
at 21:44 on May 15th, 2009
Don't worry. Miliband is putting his head into Afghanistan in a big way. He will get stuck in the mud there. Just be patient and see how this guy plays his double game.
