Leading up to the one year anniversary of the assassination of Benizir Bhutto, thousands of people have gathered in Larkana, Pakistan to honor their fallen leader.

As of Friday afternoon, 35,000 people had already arrived at the Bhutto family mausoleum in southern Pakistan. The PPP has employed over 8,000 security personnel and volunteers to maintain a peaceful ceremony commemorating Bhutto, who was shot at an election rally on December 27, 2007. Officials have expressed some fear that the ceremony could be a  target for terrorism and have gone to great lengths to protect the widower Zardiri and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani as well as Bhutto's children.

Bhutto, 54, was assassinated on December 27, 2007 in a gun and suicide attack at an election rally in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, just two months after returning to Pakistan from exile.

Her killing threw the world's only nuclear-armed Islamic nation into chaos, sparking violence and leading to months of political turmoil that ended in September when her widower Asif Ali Zardari claimed the presidency.

Zardari and their son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who co-chairs the PPP with his father, were expected to lead the procession of mourners on Saturday amid tight security.

Saturday's commemoration ceremony is due to begin at 9:00 am (0400 GMT) with a reading from the Koran, the Muslim holy book. Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani are expected to address the crowd.

Ceremonies are being held in cities around the country, with Bhutto commemorative items being sold on the streets. Government issued stamps and 10 rupee coins are now in circulation bearing the profile of the first female prime minister of a Muslim nation.
