Justice for Maguindanao Massacre victims

There have been some miss leading reports some due to translation and communication problems and a total lack of understanding of the legal process here in the Philippines. People can be taken into custody for questioning but that is not considered as an arrest. Arrests can only be made under a warrant issued by a Judge.  In fact I thought Andal Ampatuan had been arrested when he surrender himself the report was shown life on Television yesterday not knowing that a warrant was not issued.

But here is what I think is the real story because it’s from the main local newspaper Tempo…

Andal Ampatuan Jr., scion of a powerful clan suspected in the massacre of 57 people in an election caravan in Maguindanao last Monday, turned himself in Thursday amid mounting pressure on the government to crack down on lawlessness and warlords.

Police also began rounding up all those who were linked to the massacre of at least 57 journalists and other personalities in Maguindanao, with officials revealing that they have nearly 400 people now under their custody, including Andal Jr., the mayor of Datu Unsay, Maguindanao.

Director-General Jesus Verzosa, Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said the suspects whom they ordered restricted and placed under investigation include the 347 militiamen assigned to Maguindanao, the entire police force of Ampatuan town numbering to at least 20 and other police officials assigned to other areas of the troubled province.

“They are all considered suspects. They are now being investigated… On the part of the militiamen, their firearms are now being subjected to ballistics examination and their fingerprints would be obtained in order to match those which were lifted from the crime scene,” said Verzosa in a chance interview.

The story also tallies with what is being said on the local television news channels.

No one has yet been arrested…. !!!

Yesterdays story from english.aljazeera.net was full of miss information and I am not sure about their source being one that could be trusted?

The accused must face a very hard punishment of doing such murder and shall pay his life for this such murder. The gov't. should not be lax of this such incident. The law must prevail.

The death penalty has been suspended by the president and there seemingly is 100 or so killers involved they should get life sentences if caught and I expect many will be. The law is set but unfortunately laws are broken and ignored as too many judges are corrupted by money or politics. I have a feeling though due to the nature of this case those that are caught will suffer the maximal sentence of the law, but that will not be a death sentence.

Possibly a reincarnation of Hitler as it would seem no German or Austrian Filipinos are involved.

My Filipino is not that good however I believe I understand the meaning behind what you are saying.

Yes unfortunately that is the way of all political clans and warlords here in the Philippines, this however is the worst case ever to be seen.

he should be sentence to death only people with no conscience can do this. I agree on the previous comment that I've read that this man is a DECENDANT OF HITLER. Imagine how many family will be affected and how will it affect our country. This Ampatuan has no heart and has no conscience if your a man with a conscience you will not do such a thing. Imagine in just one incident there are already 57 people that were found dead.
