Meeste slachtoffers hiv-zaak niet bij rechtszaak

DUTCH prosecutors are calling for 15-year sentences on the three Dutch men accused of deliberately infecting gay men with HIV at sex parties.  Three alleged victims have spoken out after contracting the virus.

I feel fear, anger, sadness and anxiety," one of the trio's alleged victims, an HIV-positive student, told the district court in Groningen today.

Hans Jurgens, 39, Peter Mulder, 50, and Wim Dekker, 49, all HIV-positive, are charged with drugging gay men, raping them and injecting them with HIV-contaminated blood.

They stand accused of intentionally spreading the deadly virus at sex parties to which they invited people via the internet, and are charged with aggravated assault, rape and illegal possession of drugs.

Another witness, identified only as Erwin, questioned the motives for intentionally infecting a person with the virus.

"One must have incredible hatred," he said in a statement read out to the court by the presiding judge. Erwin has been taking anti-retroviral medication for six months.

"This question occupies my days and nights. For the rest of my life I will carry this crime with me, and its consequences."

A third victim told the court he had unwittingly passed the virus to his partner, not knowing that he, himself, had been infected. He has not told his children of his illness, which he said filled him with "an all-consuming anger".

"I cannot understand why they did this to me. These men not only made me ill, but cause me to carry around a burdensome secret."

Prosecutor Marcel Wolters told the court the case had sent shockwaves through the country.

"The combination of sex parties and HIV injections justifiably caused a big commotion."

THREE HIV-positive men in the Netherlands have gone on trial in Groningen accused of rape and maliciously injecting the virus into innocent guests at the drug-fueled sex parties they threw.  Fourteen men are known to have been infected with the AIDS virus by the three, the prosecution claims.

The prosecution says the three promoted gay sex parties on the internet, then drugged and raped their guests and injected them with HIV-infected blood.

Twelve of the alleged victims have tested positive for HIV.

The three defendants, all HIV-positive, deny the charges. They face up to 21 years in prison if convicted.

They are charged with assault, rape and possession of illegal drugs.

The court, in the northern city of Groningen, heard that the three men allegedly drugged their party guests with a combination of ecstasy and a date rape drug before sexually assaulting them and injecting them with their own HIV-positive blood.

Christina 123, I like this story. It's good stuff.  Criminalisation of a deliberate infection has been left behind in the HIV/AIDS agenda. This case might prove rather revealing. Some have feared discussing criminalisation could backfire people living with HIV/AIDS and their families. However, this is a horrendous case and the tree men should be punished if proved guilty of such criminal behaviour. Please keep us informed.

Christina 123, I like this story. It's good stuff.  You would think that attempted murder would also be one of the charges.  Nasty business.

Thank you all for the GS Flags.  Problem with this case will be proving that the sudden rise in HIV infections among the gay population of Groningen was not to do with the alleged victims' consensual participation (speaking purely from an imagined defence angle - I know nothing of the more intricate details), but yes, what a horrible reckless thing to do, if true.
