The number of western troops killed in Afghanistan this week (not to mention the unreported number of civilians killed) continues to climb. Three Polish soldiers serving under NATO died on Thursday in a roadside blast.

U.S.-led coalition troops killed more than 30 insurgents in a battle in eastern Afghanistan while three Polish soldiers serving with NATO forces died in a roadside blast elsewhere, officials said Thursday.

Afghanistan is experiencing a surge in violence despite Western efforts to stabilize the country.

Militants engaged the troops in a battle Wednesday until a coalition air strike destroyed an “enemy fighting position,” a coalition statement said.

It said 200 civilians fled the area before the air strike. More than 30 militants were killed and one militant was wounded and taken for treatment after the clash, it said.
