Tibetan exiles have suspended protests here after the government threatened to prolong detentions to prevent unrest during polls next week, activists said on Thursday.
"We have called off our anti-China protest in Kathmandu in view of the upcoming elections in Nepal," Thupden Tenzing Jamphel, chairman of the Nepal Tibetan Volunteer Youth for Free Tibet group told AFP.
For the past two weeks, exiles have protested daily outside Chinese diplomatic offices against a crackdown by authorities following deadly unrest in their homeland last month.
On Thursday, China's envoy told Nepal to be firmer with the protests.
"We have received warnings from the home ministry saying that they will keep us in jail for days if (we are) arrested," the activist said.
India has always maintained a huge interest in Nepali politics. But the only interest that seems to beget China's attention to Nepal, are the Tibetans living here. China has chosen to maneuver any means possible into arm twisting the Nepalese authorities to make the life of Tibetan people living in Nepal as difficult as possible.
With the recent protests and killings in Tibet that continue unabated,Tibetans here cannot even perform a solidarity peace protest. With theprotest that has been happening in Kathmandu since March 10, hundredsof Tibetan people have been beaten, baton charged, tear gassed, detained, threatened and et al. It is unfortunate that the currentgovernment in Nepal has so quickly forgotten that it came to powerthrough the leverages of similar democratic protests. Tibetan refugeeprotesters in venting out their frustrations are dealt with disdain andwith a level of harshness that has now become an international shamefor Nepal.
