Tibetan Self immolation Case: NHRC issue notice to Indian Govt.
New Delhi:National Human Rights Commission has taken serious note on Tibetan young man who set himself on fire and latter died in New Delhi. The commission has issued notice to the Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India calling for a report in the matter within four weeks. Tibetan young activist died on 28th this March after setting himself on fire on 26th March in New Delhi to protest Chinese rule of the Himalayan region. Hours before Chinese President Hu Jintao was due to arrive in India for a summit of emerging market nations. Pictures taken by media photographer showed the activist running down a street enveloped in flames. But no police or security personnel are trying to save him. Taking the issue Odisha Based rights organization, India Media Centre’s Managing trustee and Human rights activist Mr. Akhand filed a petition before NHRC. He alleged that Police would have saved him. But No initiative was taken by the police. It is the duty of police to provide security even to a protestor in a democratic country, here police did not take any preventive measures to avoid such a situation. He requested commission to order for an inquiry into the matter and Rs. 5 lakhs compensation to the victim’s family. The commission has issued notice to the Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India calling for a report in the matter within four week.
