Some Tibetan high school children in the neighboring country of Nepal have demonstrated against a UN compound there. So far Budhist Nepal has been largely absent from this conflict, but one wonders how easily the country could be drawn in.

About 20 Tibetan high school children scaled a brick wall surrounding the United Nations compound in Katmandu on Friday morning, carrying a small home-made sign that read "Free Tibet" and asking for the United Nations to help their cause, according to a United Nations spokesman.

They were served a lunch of steamed dumplings, called momos, instead.

John Brittain, a spokesman for the United Nations, described the teenagers as polite intruders who sat on the grass inside the compound, were asked to write their grievances for United Nations officials and were treated to lunch. No one has been arrested, Mr. Brittain said, and agency officials would make sure they all were escorted home safely.

Many Nepalese Buddhists and Tibetan Buddhists show support for the country of China, because that accords with what His Holiness The Dalai Lama teaches. They may still favor a Tibetan country, but they are a realistic people. In Nepal Chinese television is a common sight in restaurants for entertainment.

The Tibetan culture evolved in response to a hard environment, and a mix of people cultures and ideas that any great group of trade routes between old Tibet (China) and India. This mix brought the world a great religion, Tibetan Buddhism.

The difference in these times as I understand is that the Chinese government picked a bad time to crack down again on a good people. Their rhetoric sounds like junior high school kids chatting about cliques, in the face of the many deserved honors the world has given to His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama, the Chinese Government makes themselves into a laughing stock. If those in the West laugh at the Chinese Government statements "like parrots at a bag-piper; And other of such vinegar aspect", how far behind can be the Chinese people themselves until they do not buy into nor believe this grinding disruption of an ethnic minority?

The Tibetan people have won against much worse odds than this over time. They will win again. Because they laugh at the negativities of the Chinese and poke fun at them.

This image was shot by Steve Dalos in Boudha Kathmandu Nepal early winter 2008. Kathmandu is the repository and mainstay of Tibetan Buddhist culture in the world. The Tibetan people and their culture flowers there, and the ethnic Nepalese benefit amply as well.
