50 years in Mussoorie for Tibetan community

China Invaded Tibet in 1950 after which His Holiness the 14th the Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso assumed temporal responsibilty for Tibet. In 1954 he went to Biejing in 1954, to talk peace with Mao Tse-tung and other Chinese leaders, including Chou En-lai and Deng Xiaoping. In 1956, while visiting India to attend the 2500th Buddha Jayanti Anniversary, he had a series of meetings with Prime Minister Nehru and Premier Chou about deteriorating conditions in Tibet. His efforts to bring about a peaceful solution to Sino-Tibetan conflict were thwarted by Bejing's ruthless policy in Eastern Tibet, which ignited a popular uprising and resistance. This resistance movement spread to other parts of the country. On 10 March 1959 the capital of Tibet, Lhasa, exploded with the largest demonstration in Tibetan history, calling on China to leave Tibet and reaffirming Tibet's independence. The Tibetan National Uprising was brutally crushed by the Chinese army. His Holiness escaped to India where he was given political asylum. Some 80,000 Tibetan refugees followed His Holiness into exile. Today, there are more than 120,000 Tibetan in exile. In April 1959, after fleeing Chinese occupation of Tibet,  a simple Buddhist monk -  Dalai Lama established the Tibetan Government of Exile in Mussoorie.Eventually moved to Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh. After one year. The first Tibetan school was established in Mussoorie in 1960. Tibetans settled mainly in Happy Valley in Mussoorie. The Birlas were kind enough to provide their home birla House in Mussoorie for His Holiness Dalai Lama.Dalai Lama frequently gave darshan to his devotees at Birla House.Jwarlal Nehru,Indira Gandhi were frequent visitors at Birla House then.Mussoorie takes pride in poviding shelter to Dalai lama and his people at that time.Today, some 5,000 Tibetans live in Mussoorie peacefullyThese fifty years have been the years of despair for the  Tibetan community in Mussoorie. The Tibetan Youth is of the view that the middle path approach has failed to a large extent in providing Freedom for Tibetans and more procative meqasures are needed so that the autocratic Chinese Regime can hear their voice. The Genral Secreatry of Tibetan Homes Fundation Tashi Phunsuk however differs and say that it is due to His Holiness Dalai Lama’s middle path and non viloence approach the Tibetans have suppor globally and vilolent approach would change that.

Sense of Despair creeping in  Tibetan Youth of Mussoorie

Tibetan community was out in numbers in mussoorie to mark the 50th year of the uprising in Tibet in 1959 which resulted in Chinese occupation and exile of His Holiness Dalai Lama to India.

The Tibetan youth also participated in the protest march at Mussorie  but the signs of despair among the youth were evident as they were of the view that more proactive approach  should be taken now as he Tibet has failed to convince China hrough non vilent means. The chinese opression has increased and now the patriotic reeducation and mass re-introduction of population is carrying on to wipe out the tibeatns from the forbidden kingdom. and Tibet. The elders however have shown full support and faith towards Dalai Lama and are of the view that the middle path policy has gained the tibetans many friends around the world and violent eans will erase that very quickly,So the advise of Dalai Lama should be followed.

The Tibetan  children who have been born in India have a look of despair on their faces and looking towards the intenaional community for the solution.

Thank you for that report, azzayindia.

I know many fine Tibetans here in NYC who cannot return to their home because of the Chinese aggressors. We must keep up the International pressure and support the resistance.
