A member of the Sri Lanka navy, Chaminda, Kumara Hewage, was captured by the LTTE with six other in November 2006.  The remained in custody of the LTTE until they escaped on May 17th.

In his statement he says that he was held in bunkers, chained.  The Tigers  treated them well and registered prisoners with IRC.  At one point they even wanted to turn them over to the IRC but couldn't, since the IRC was not allowed into the war zone.

He believes that in the final days the LTTE was out of ammunition for heavy weapons and as a result did not use them  The Sri Lanka Army did not use any either according to him.

His group was finally able to escape with refugees and LTTE members.  He said that the country side was littered with thrown away pistols and other weapons and ammunition.

Chaminda Kumara Hewage of the Sri Lankan navy was captured by the LTTE with six others in November 2006.

The group managed to escape with fleeing civilians and Tamil Tigers early in the morning of 17 May.

"Many Tamil Tigers had already surrendered and the unit guarding us also decided to give themselves up so we made use of the opportunity to flee," he told the BBC's Sinhala Service.

Chaminda Kumara says he saw pistols and other weapons being thrown away by the fleeing LTTE members.

"There were pistols, LTTE tags, belts and cyanide capsules thrown away in LTTE camps and all along the road" he says.

Well, it does sound that the LTTE where not the monsters they are made out to be by the Sri Lanka Government after all.

True, they are human beings too. Most LTTE cadres served their masters under duress. It was either fight or get executed, or even a threat of some reprisal to their kith and kin. That was how the LTTE hierarchy operated here and abroad.

By the 17th of May, the group gaurding the Sailors would have decided that the monster leaders would not come looking for them. So, were able to divest of the cyanide capsules and weapons prior to escaping.

Thanks Albertacowpoke for the posting.

LTTE has always treated its SLA prisoners with respect and dignity.

There was a "joke" among SLA that it would be better to get caught to LTTE than fighting them.

In the final moments of the war, there was a surrendering avenue brokered by a group of journalists and the UN. UN has informed the Sri Lankan government that the LTTE would be surrendering. Regardless, the Sri Lankan Army tortured and shot the outcoming LTTE cadets and Political Wing leaders. The wife of Nadasan, the Political Wing Leader of LTTE, is a Sinhalese, and she cried in Sinhala and English, "He is trying to surrender, don't shoot him." The Sri Lankan Army tortured and killed Nadesan and shot his wife too. There are reports of torture and rape of the LTTE cadets before their killing. In the "war without witness", all the misery experienced by Tamils and LTTE will be locked in Tamils sources for a long time.

When the actual news shows up in the main stream media, the story will be taken as history and moved forward.

The only problem will be Tamils will remeber this, the way the Sri Lankan government delivered an all military solution to their aspiration of living freely in Sri Lanka. Even after the demise of their freedom fighters, no real solution is put forth, and the living conditions of Tamils are under heavy veil of media ban and aid agencies ban.

"it does sound that the LTTE where not the monsters they are made out to be by the Sri Lanka Government after all."

That gotta be the most childish comment about LTTE I ever saw. I wonder if the family members of those who got butchered by LTTE bus bombs would think the same. Or anyone who saw the bodies of those little babies who were smashed against walls and killed in border villages countless times in Sri Lanka would think the same.

Thank you Poke for the story. Yes LTTE had treated the POW well, in a number of occasions before this as well. The reason however is, the reason they keep prisoners is to use for exchange whenever the need arises. Hence it pays off to treat them well because the prisoners would live to tell the tale.

//bodies of those little babies who were smashed against walls and killed

What is the source of this alligation ? Is any of your relatives affected like this ? Dont make up stories just to counter something.

Its the sri lanka army known for raping, conducting nude parade of dead LTTE cadres, sexually abusing children etc.

LTTE are monsters beyond doubt.

".....The wife of Nadasan, the Political Wing Leader of LTTE, is a Sinhalese....."

A small fraction of Tamils and a smaller fraction of Sinhalese were made monsters of LTTE by the late Mr. Pirabaharan. (Mr. here stands for MonsteR)

".............aspiration of living freely in Sri Lanka"

Sorry I forgot to add that; I have lived in Sri Lanka up to the last week of May '09 and enjoyed the same freedom of any Sinhalese or a Burgher living there. But am extremely sad about the plight of  those poor Tamil, Muslim, Sinhala IDPs living in the camps of the LTTE influenced areas. Some, nearly up to a decade.

The source of that to me is an Army friend of mine who had witnessed such a scene some years ago.

For pictures and statistics of massacres of children, please go here.
Under 'Ethnic Cleansing' heading, browse year by year and find the detailed reports. Refer newspapers of the said dates to confirm/clarify if you have any doubts.

Anybody can write a massacre and LTTE and post butchered photos of innocent children, however it should be shown with evidence of such massacre.

If the Sri Lankan government was sure that the LTTE has done these massacres, not their own Sri Lankan Army, they could have easily detained the surrendering LTTE cadets, and political wing leaders and brought them to justice in the ICC.

The UN brokered surrendering of LTTE cadets and Political wing leaders were tortured and shot down by the Sri Lankan Army by the instruction of the Sri Lankan government. This indicates that the Sri Lankan government has way more to hide and be scared of in front ICC, than the LTTE and the LTTE has factual evidence of Sri Lanka's intent to destroy the Tamils in the Island, and also to do the same to Sinhalese and Muslims under the pretension of LTTE.

There are over 2,000 LTTE cadets were butchered at the scene. The current internment camps, the pictures above happens to Tamil IDPs every day by the Sri Lankan Army. The Sri Lankan Army lets the Tamil children to be subjected to countless atrocities.

Pictures are useful to convey the message, but facts are more important to hold the truth.

Tamils in Sri Lanka are facing colossal humanitarian tragedy, but the Sinhalese and Muslims are at a way worse stage at this Sri Lankan government or any successive governments as they have no intention to bring peace to the Island.

If the Sri Lankan government gets rid of all the Tamils in Sri Lanka under the current high scrutiny of the world, justice will be served sooner or later.

Thiru, very glad to hear you say this.

Some Muslims lived as IDPs for 22 years according to Jeevan Thiagarajah of CHA.
