Should Black History Month itself fade into history?

Many have long argued that African-American history should be incorporated into year-round education. Now, claims that Black History Month is outdated are gaining a new potency, as schools diversify their curricula and President Barack Obama's election opens a new chapter in the nation's racial journey.

"If Obama's election means anything, it means that African-American history IS American history and should be remembered and recognized every day of the year,"

It may well be time to

do this. I am not sure

but in general I would

support one history,

including all people.

Either way, surely 28 days is not enough time!

Very true.

With the election of President Obama, this discussion was bound to surface in the U.S. I am all for embracing a full spectrum of a country's history in schools' curricula. However, most taught history follows the recollections of victors rather than the vanguished. Because of this, I believe in highlighting lesser known - or suppressed - aspects of a nation's heritage. In Canada, where our black history is not widely known or recognized, I want Black History month to continue and thrive.

That is also a valid viewpoint.  I am open on this.

Good comment.

Black History Month, Like Saint Patricks Day, is a time of celebration of ones culture, the only Difference is that on Saint Patricks Day, everyone is Irish, versus Black History Month!

I put it this way, work on the Positives of Black History Month  and quit dwelling on the Negatives as ,many do , cause we all know the Negatives don't buy the groceries or put a roof over your head!

There is something to the saying, Dwelling on the Past, will Doom you to repeat it!

Good points.  We can't change the past but we can change the future.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH STAYS!!! Our forefather's struggled so that we can have what we have today. Our forefathers struggled so there would be and Obama 1st Black President of the United Stated. Don't take away what we hold so sacred to us.  We were ecluded for so long that we're still sensitive to the very thought of racism.

It's importatnt to dwell on the positive and the negatives. When we recognize the negative then we can do our part to make it positive.

There is still not enough taught in schools; so why stop Black History now? It's important and it's relevant...it's our BLACK HISTORY, it's AMERICAN HISTORY all at the same time.

I never understood why one race should have a special month dedicated to them.  This is America and every month should celebrate American History.  The problem is that the black American has become a class that feels it is entitled to everything.  Every group that has come into this country went through a struggle and then became successful.  The black American is the only group that consistently crys "foul" and feels that they should be given special treatment.  Blacks make up 13% of the population, however, they feel they should be given special treatment for jobs.  Take the NFL.  Whenever a coaching job comes up the team must make an attempt to interview a black coach.  Crazy....Based on statistics if 100 people are to be hired then around 13 employees will be black.  But thats not how it goes.  Special hiring practices, college entrance acceptance...where do we stop.  Wake up, take care of your people, stop the violence and stop the blame.
