Car bomb found in New York's Times Square

FBI,  New York City Police probing SUV bomb in Times Square :  Police Commissioner  sees "no evidence of Taliban connection"

Authorities in New York City found a potentially powerful car bomb in Times Square late Saturday night.  City residents and police were able to stave off what might have been a deadly attack.

SUV Bomb failed to detinate

New York City officials say police, firefighters and bomb experts were notified of a suspicious sport utility vehicle after a t-shirt vendor noticed smoke coming out of it.

Smoke was coming from the SUV, and a popping noise was heard.  Law Enforcement removed gas containers,  fireworks, a propane tank, and timing devices from within the vehicle.   Time Square was evacuated by police.

New York City Mayor Bloomberg praised police and residents for their swift action.

The FBI is investigating, and President Obama has praised NYC for its response to what New York Governor David Paterson has called a potential act of terror.

I gave the story a different spin.

I like the factual reporting (without spin) of Susans story.

Not to offend YJ, but that is the purpous of news.

Before investigations are complete,Iranians are not accused of masterminding this act of terror, making any comment on this story would be premature.False flag operation should not be ruled out.

Judging by the components, it looks like a "local effort" to me. Plenty of financially destroyed people who blame NY, NY out there for the crisis. Anyway, they knew less than nothing about putting a bomb together. I've seen photos of vehicle IED's after they blew up and the only thing left intact was the car's LPG cylinder in the boot.

There is one small, potential benefit to this incident. Make a note of every newspaper and journalist who hints at Iran and put them on your "Never Ever Trust" list...

I would agree,  this is an American behind this,  not anything to do with Al Quaeda.....

We should get a job in the FBI's Criminal Profile Division! Seems a white guy in his 40's is the suspect. I'll be expecting to read:

"White male aged between 32 - 45. Quiet guy, neighbours said he he always said hello. Wife left him and took the kids when he lost his job. Lost the house, yada yada..."

To paraphrase someone: when people lose everything, they lose it.

@Susan.I am in total agreement with you.Al-Qaeda had to do with what CIA wanted them to do.What US administration orchesterated for propaganda purposes,Al-Qaeda spokesperson, relaxing in a chamber in CIA's HQ,Langley, owned responsibility for an act they knew nothing about.

Just to make you go mmmmm! What if this is another Oaklahoma type twist again?

If it was an "inside job" then the bomb would've gone off properly killing enough people to incite the necessary level of fervour to pursue whatever policy was the objective. Government operatives are professionals and wouldn't have been so amateurish.

Anyway, the US has no specific agenda to push over the hill of public opinion right now. They know themselves they can never invade Iran despite the strongest urgings of Zionist Senator Lieberman. There's nothing to be gained (today) from a false flag bombing.

To make people frightened sometimes bombs don't go off. Here the purpose was not to build up hysteria but to instill fear in the public mind,to remind them that  the Al-Qaeda operatives are active, war on terror has to go on till Al-Qaeda is finished.
