TNI still has no plan to reinforce troops in RI- Timor Leste borders
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian military (TNI) still has no plan to reinforce its personnel stationed near the Indonesia-Timor Leste borders following the shooting early Monday of President Jose Ramos-Horta, a spokesman said.
"The decision on whether or not to reinforce personnel largely depends on the results of the government`s assessment of domestic situation in Timor Leste following Monday`s political chaos," Head of the TNI Headquarters` Information Service Center Rear Marshal Sagom Tamboen said on Monday.
He said security maintenance efforts near the borders were running as usual without any increase in activity.
After all, security agencies would step up patrol along the land borders to anticipate a possible exodus of people from Timor Leste to the Indonesian territory, he said.
"So, the TNI is still waiting for inputs from many parties, including its soldiers stationed near the borders and the Foreign Ministry until there is a definite decision on the part of the government on whether or not to reinforce personnel in the Indonesia-Timor Leste borders," he said.
Rebel soldiers led by Major Alfredo Reinaldo reportedly shot Ramos-Horta in the stomach at the latter`s home in Dili on Monday.
Ramos-Horta was later flown to Australia aboard a helicopter by Australian soldiers for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, Alfredo Reinaldo was reportedly killed in the shootout between presidential guards and rebels who attacked the president`s home early Monday. (*) END
