Top Ten Shoe-Throwing-Journalist Headlines
Yesterday, 29-year-old Muntathar al Zaidi started the clock ticking on his 15 minutes of fame by throwing one of his shoes — and then the other — at President George W. Bush during a news conference in Baghdad. Below are the Top 10 headlines that have surfaced during the past 24 hours about the Egyptian journalist’s actions:
1. Lee Harvey Florsheim: Unwitting Example of U.S. Success in Iraq — American Thinker offers a not-so-subtle reference to the conspiracy theories surrounding JFK’s assassination more than three decades ago;
2. Throwing hissy fits - and footwear — Interestingly, the subhead of this Toronto Star article described the shoe-hurling incident as “a primal urge many can relate to.”
3. Bush’s Dodgeball Skills Admirable — While the headline is intriguing, the opening sentence is even better: “‘SHOCK AND AWE’ meet ‘Sock and Awe.’” Unfortunately, the piece goes downhill from there.
4. Great shoes through history –- This LIVENEWS article explains how, over the years, many have made the mistake of assuming the most important tools of a world statesmen are things like armies, rhetoric, white papers and press secretaries when, in fact, the most important instrument is the humble shoe.
5. Shooting with shoes — This piece from Korea’s English-language version of Joong Ang Daily offers more of an intellectual approach than one might expect from the headline. It begins this way: Anthropologists estimate it was 26,000 to 40,000 years ago when humans first began to wear shoes.
6. Modesto Bee reporter watches as Iraqi journalist tosses shoes at Bush — This article is really just a brief and points to another which offers the first-person account of the reporter mentioned in the headline. Kind of interesting as he was just in front of the shooter thrower and wrote, “I couldn’t believe he had time to get a second one off.”
7. Bush: Who Throws a Shoe? Honestly! — This TMZ headline, which only leads to a video of the incident, asks a good question nevertheless.
8. Afghan reporters keep shoes on for Bush — Early into this Associated Press report, Afghan reporters are shown to have a sense of humor:
Some of the reporters — a collegial bunch that sees one another several times a week — egged on one of their colleagues, jokingly trying to pressure the television reporter into taking off his shoe and hurling it once the U.S. president arrived.
9. Bush shoe incident goes viral — Perhaps John McCain can learn a lesson from this incident. Next time he runs, he can prod a reporter into throwing a show at him so that he can get some free media coverage of his campaign to offset any fundraising shortage he will most certainly encounter in any future presidential campaigns. Unlike the Bush incident, I hope any future shoe tossers hit their mark when aiming at McCain.
10. In My World: The Lone Shoeman — This IMAO headline follows AT’s lead.
Bonus: Shoe-Throwing Incident Prompts ‘Sole’ Searching — This is a headline from a post I published earlier today. Couldn’t resist the urge to use cornball humor.
