Perhaps the dilemma lies in not in the piece of cloth but in the meaning behind the fabric. Objectively, why would anyone care about anything more than a torn pillow case? The problem is of course in the symbolism, and representation the flag stands for. A torn flag could conjure images of a torn America for some people and disrespect for what America is. I saw this torn flag in front of a residential home and found it interesting that the inhabitants were proud enough to go through the trouble of flying a flag yet careless enough to neglect it.
