Fire Destroys Heritage Building At Yonge And Gould Street In Downtown Toronto, Firefighters Injured - Ryerson University Closed For January 3rd, 2011
A massive six alarm fire has is under control but not after it gutted a heritage building in downtown Toronto, injuring two firefighters, at Yonge and Gould Streets, and forcing the closure of nearby Ryerson University on Monday, January 3rd.
Two firefighters were injured when they fell through a section of roof. A third was also injured but refused treatment and returned to fight the blaze, said Capt. Mike Strapko.
Emergency crews were called to the scene around 4 a.m. Monday. Fifty fire vehicles, including chiefs and support units, were dispatched.
The Heritage building at Yonge and Gould was built in 1888 and once housed the Empress Hotel but was vacant when the fire broke out.
Yonge Street is closed to traffic between Dundas Street and Gerrard Street.
Ryerson University says it will close for the day.
