Raw Video.

News Wanted ! If anyone has anymore news about this crash please feel free to add it in the comments as it is late here and I am turning in for the night.

Update 2.43am GMT: The latest report is saying more than 150 hurt, the highlight below also has a video.

It happened during the evening commute at the Canton MBTA station and it left more than 150 people hurt.

Update 2.00am GMT.

It is unclear if the CSX freight car was parked on the tracks, or how it ended up rolling onto the same track on which the southbound commuter train was traveling. The rail line is maintained and controlled by Amtrak.

The latest news I can find says 10 people were taken to hospital.

About 50 people reported mostly minor injuries, and 10 passengers and crew members were taken to hospitals, said Scott Farmelant, a spokesman for Massachusetts Bay Commuter Rail. He said he did not know the extent of those injuries.

Passenger, Gary Rozenas, 55, told the Boston Herald that the crash ignited a small brush fire.

"All the lights went out and people were flying down the aisles and people were on the floor of the car," he said. "The car began filling up with dust and the scary part was part of the woods was burning up outside the doors."

One report says "dozens" of people have been sent to hospitals, mostly with minor injuries.

At least two people were seriously hurt, with some of the passengers brought to ambulances on backboards.

The commuter train was stationary when hit by the freight train box car just before 5.30pm.

CANTON, Mass. —  Several people have been injured after a freight train box car collided with a commuter train locomotive.

Stacy Wilbur, a spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Rail, which operates the service for the MBTA, said Tuesday preliminary reports indicate the most of the injuries are minor.

BREAKING:

Vinny, thanks for getting this story out so quickly. It will now show up on the home page for four hours. If new developments justify it, I'll renew this flag for another cycle.

Rachel Nixon

Thanks for this Vinny. Interestingly the Association of American Railroads put out a press release a few days ago about how the number of train accidents in Massachusetts was lower in 2007 than in 2006. It also stated that freight rail is the safest way to move goods across the US.

PEP

Great information, Rachel. A few years back (maybe a decade or so?) it seemed like AmTrack kept having accidents in the lower Gulf to Florida run. Really scary.

I have a friend who's an engineer. Some teenaged kids got drunk and were partying, got on the tracks and stalled out their car. He couldn't stop the train, not all survived. He was totally exonerated from any blame, but the accident, even though the official documents and investigation revealed that he did everything possible, just devastated him.

good stuff:

Thanks for getting this so quickly Vinny.  Please keep us posted.

One suggestion: it's helpful to include the time (and your timezone) for updates to ongoing stories.

For example,

UPDATE, 5:30 EST:

Vinny

The bit on the post that says updated 7 mins ago does help people to know when I last updated, but thanks for the advice.

PEP

Hi Rob, I see that you and I agree on updating styles--I've been using the "update" notation at the top of my stories for months now. Is this now policy?Are you slipping us early news?     ;}

However, some members (not Vince, who always makes things very clear when he updates his material) have said that they feel the "update" method detracts from their presentation. Another member and I had a really interesting discussion on this awhile ago. I like the update at the top of the story; some members don't even like to note that they've changed material.

I suspect that as NP grows ya'll will continue to develop policies and guidelines. Thanks for keeping us informed, Rob!

good stuff:

Vinny, I like this story. It's good stuff. Fast, too.

Rob Peters

Great job on this story Vinny, and thanks for obliging me with the timestamp. Take care.

PEP

Rob, some help is needed on the timestamping. It's running about 45 minutes ahead of actual time where I am.

Rob Peters

OK, thanks for letting me know PEP.  I'll pass it along to our tech team.
