In Feburary of this year police offers at the Shelby County Criminal Justice Center in Memphis,TN were caught on camera beating a transgender woman by the name of Duanna Johnson. Johnson was hancuffed at the time and was severely beaten and called names while being detained by police. Duanna Johnson spoke to news stations inMemphis several times stating that the beating was a hate crime and that she had plans to sue the Memphis Police Department. It has been reported that just recently Ms. Johnson had gone forth with her plans to sue the city, but before her case could be heard she met her fate.

Duanna Johnson was found dead November 9, 2008 a few blocks from her home. She was shot in the head execution style.

Rumors of police affiliation with Ms. Johnson's murder are ripping through Memphis. Some believe that Ms. Johnson was sought out and killed due to her reporting of the beating and the fact that those reports cost two Memphis police officers their jobs. Ms. Johnson's lawyer, Murray Wells says that those accusations are just heresay, but the federal lawsuit against the Memphis Police Department will move forward.

How sad for democracy.  Prisoner beaten; incident caught on tape; prisoner threatens suit; prisoner dead.  Duanne Johnson was beaten in the same Memphis/Shelby County Jail where my mentally ill brother, Larry Neal, a heart patient, died under secret arrest in August 2003.

See more about Ms. Johnson at this article:

Memphis Police Taped Beating Transsexual Detainee - $1.3 Million Lawsuit Filed
http://my.nowpublic.com/world/memphis-police-taped-beating-transsexual-detainee-1-3-million-lawsuit-filed-mary-neal

Ms. Johnson should have stayed home like I must do now.  Humph!  Sad.

I tried to post these videos to my original story (link above), but it made it past the CENSORSHIP to the large online services and has thousands of hits.  So "they" won't allow me to add new data (the folks who censor me and control my use of the Internet illegally depriving me of freedom of speech.  - I simply need to sue some more folks!).  Anyway, here is something folks probably thought they had cleaned off the Internet pretty well, but I found it and want to share with you.  Be quick!  "They" are fast on the cleanup!

See the raw footage at this link and interviews with Ms. Johnson:  http://www.lgbthatecrimes.org/doku.php/duanna-johnson

(If you are interested in seeing these videos, particularly the raw footage of Ms. Johnson's beatdown, hurry and see it and make a CD copy.  Most of these raw footage videos were seemingly removed from the Internet shortly after her abuse - damage control for the police through the corporate owned, government controlled media.)

Thank you for this report,  BlackGirlThinking.  I am publicizing it widely.

This is so very tragic. I suppose this unfortunate woman did not realize it was necessary to give up her life and stay home the way I have done in order to stay safe.

We made the two YouTube Cochran Firm Fraud videos for protection, to get past the censorship surrounding the things that happen in Shelby County Jail and the elaborate cover-up that occurred after the secret incarceration and wrongful death of my mentally ill brother there.

We only made the videos after I was followed by up to four cars and 911 would not come when I called for help. Memphis/Shelby County Jail is the 3rd largest jail in the nation. The USDOJ was in overview of the jail after past abuses against inmates, but even this federal agency refuses to investigate Larry's secret death there.   We have two petitions for the USDOJ to please do its job, but I suppose "different" folks like Larry just are not worth the effort of equal justice, as compared to the investigative effort Michael Vicks' dead dogs received:  http://www.petitiononline.com/Neal/petition.html

This is why we are going to start the live web stream - so the world (www.) can be a security camera for my family. See ANNOUNCING NEW WEBCAST - JUSTICE QUEST FOR LARRY NEAL:  http://my.nowpublic.com/health/announcing-new-webcast-justice-quest-larry-neal-and-mentally-ill-americans

Let us all pray for Ms. Johnson. She did not deserve this just for being "different," and neither did my brother, or the victims of three other federal lawsuits against the Memphis Police and Shelby County Jail.

This is why I write so many articles, NowPublic members and reading public.  These articles are my "skin under the fingernails" should something bad happen.

BlackGirlThinking, thank you for this story. A tragedy without doubt. I was not able to access the link you provided however. It would be helpful if, in the future, you use NowPublic highlight tool when publishing. Thanks!

Here is the update you were not meant to see.  I WAS NOT ALLOWED by those who have taken over my computer to update my article on Ms. Johnson.  This is the data they did not want posted.  I keep nothing to myself on these matters, because I feel it is infinitely better to not be seen as a threat to anyone by having secret information.  DISCLOSURE is my family's protection, the way I see it.

****************

UPDATE - 11-09-08

Several things have occurred since I wrote the Duanna Johnson article at this link:  http://my.nowpublic.com/world/memphis-police-taped-beating-transsexual-detainee-1-3-million-lawsuit-filed-mary-neal

For one thing, I called the office of Duanna Johnson's attorney to report the jail's previous history regarding persons who are somehow "different."  The telephone was answered by a receptionist on tape who stated the names of Duanna Johnson's attorneys, and JULIAN BOLTON, ESQ.  I was shocked, as Julian Bolton was also the attorney who was managing partner of the Memphis office of The (Johnnie) Cochran Firm when that law firm contracted with my mother following the wrongful death of Larry Neal (if this is the same man).  The Cochran Firm neglected to tell my family - its clients - that Mr. Bolton was also a 20+year Shelby County Commissioner, and that the Shelby County Commission owns and operates the jail where Larry Neal died and where Ms. Johnson was badly beaten.  Hopefully, that was not the SAME Julian Bolton, Esq. who apparently shared an office or receptionist with Duanna Johnson's attorneys.

Secondly, weeks after Officer McRae beat Duanna Johnson on film, Internet news reports were that Officer McRae was considering placing a lawsuit against his previous employer because he damaged his hand beating Ms. Johnson.  There was also a video with the news report.  Unfortunately, I failed to report on that development the very day that I saw it, and like many other things that happen related to Memphis/Shelby County Jail, the information does not seem to be readily available now.

MS. DUANNA JOHNSON WAS MURDERED.  The news story at the link below reports "Duanna Johnson was found dead November 9, 2008 a few blocks from her home. She was shot in the head, execution style."

http://my.nowpublic.com/world/transgender-woman-who-was-set-sue-city-found-dead

Ms. Johnson's relatives or even a non-relative may consider continuing with her lawsuit under the LAW OF SUBSTITUTION.  I understand that it is not necessary that one who does so has to be a relative.

It is time for everyone to stop hiding.  Here are only some of the people I told about the events above today.  SEE IF THEY INVESTIGATE ANYTHING PERTAINING TO LARRY'S SECRET ARREST, DEATH, DENIAL OF JUSTICE, OR THE INFORMATION ABOUT DUANNA JOHNSON I SUPPLIED.  Can you find your favorite "reliable" news reporter?  If not, wait til you see my next list.

DO YOU NOTICE THE NOTE "FLAG THIS MESSAGE"?  THAT DID NOT SHOW UP IN MY EMAIL, ONLY WHEN I COPIED IT HERE.  Usually when I type a story or my mail is "FLAGGED," THE ARTICLE OR EMAIL MESSAGE DISAPPEARS BEFORE I CAN HIT "SEND" OR "PUBLISH."

Publishing widely what happened to Larry and what happens to my family has been my "survival tool."  I have met with much opposition.  Complete blackout in the mainstream media and interferrence on the Internet.

How convenient for the City, I am sure the Police force under City pay role had nothing to do with all this ... It does make one wonder though especially in such a case. A City like Memphis has much to lose however i am sure that a good lawyer would find a way to sue the City on behalf of the victim and leg the compensation to some charity organization dealing with abuse and discrimination of Government authorities.

Hello, Paschen!  You would ordinarily have a good suggestion, except it is my experience that the lawyers in Memphis actually sign on to work for the Plaintiffs, but actually work for the Defendants.  Hopefully not in every case, but certainly in ours.

This is the same jail where my brother died under secret arrest, with the USDOJ in overview, but we have been denied any accountability or records or investigation for five years, so we are suing the Johnnie Cochran Firm, our "pretending under contract to represent us" attorneys.

Read the comments when you have time.  I decided to share more of the story than ever before, and I hope that I did not facilitate Duanna's murder by not screaming about this louder than I did.  (Of course, it MAY be completely unrelated.)

Good to see you back!

Congratulations, BlackGirlThinking!  Your news report on Duanne Johnson's death made Front Page on Care2News Network today where I posted it yesterday.  I have been making comments on her tragic demise on my news story about her tragic police abuse at this link:

http://my.nowpublic.com/world/memphis-police-taped-beating-transsexual-detainee-1-3-million-lawsuit-filed-mary-neal#comment-233801

Other people who have suffered or died in Shelby County Jail or by Memphis Police did not deserve to have this happen to them for being "different." See three more cases of deaths and abuse to mentally ill or "different" people at this link:

                          http://braxtonandfriends.org/index.html

And where is the United States Justice Department while all of these Americans are suffering and dying for their "differences"?  That federal agency has the responsibility to uphold the civil rights of institutionalized persons in this country, but it REFUSES to even investigate Larry's secret arrest and death.  Amazing.

Congratulations on making Front Page.  I apologize for forgetting to tell you while they still had it BIG with Duanne's picture, but see it quick before new headlines take its place!  You may also want to read the comments.  Here is Care2's notification to me:

Congratulations! The Care2 Community has promoted your submission to

Those cold-hearted people with the jail and police department will do anything to be able to get away with what they did to your brother, this woman, and surviving members of your family-even murder! (Which I honestly think they did to your brother-even if it was just by neglecting his needs.)

Thanks for letting us know about this other tragedy. I hope enough people in your community get so sick of the police department and their cronies doing that kind of stuff that they will do something. And I mean a large nonviolent protest-not just your work to keep what happende to Larry from happening to others and not just this young lady suing the jail.

True, some of us may have to die or become incarcerated ourselves if enough of us bombard your community's jail and police department. But if you're the only one who gets involved, it might not happen.

At least we have the Internet to help us out and to even inform people in other communities like mine about things like your brother's death happening in our own backyards. In fact your hackers know this; this must be why they screw up your computer.

Let's pray for additional people who have the courage to do what it takes to stand up for people like your brother and the transgendered person who sued the jail.

your friend

Thank you for your comments, Paula.

I just thought about something - maybe we need to make some bumper stickers that say

PSYCHIATRIC PATIENTS ARE PEOPLE, TOO!

or

DID YOU HUG A PSYCHIATRIC PATIENT TODAY?

or even

I JUST SAW MY PSYCHIATRIST - MAYBE YOU SHOULD, TOO!

A bumper sticker campaign will start folks thinking about our vulnerable citizens who desperately need HELP!!!  They are being Tasered to death, killed in restraint chairs, left in solitary confinement for 9 months without baths, exercise, or doctors (Nashville CCA facility), and were being gassed in Florida until recently (hopefully, that was outlawed, but I will check).

Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.  Hebrews 13:3

I added raw footage videos of murdered transgender woman's beatdown to the first comment - hurry and see it.  I had raw footage at the site of my original article months ago, but the television station took it down and replaced it with a cut version that included police explaining how one did not actually see what one perceived with one's own eyes.
