This is an eyewitness report from the NowPublic member azzayindia who was on the scene.
NP Rank:
A transgendered person known locally as hijra Rajni Rawat is once again contesting for the Member of Parliament or MP fom Tehri parliamentary seat in Uttarakhand. Rajni Rawat had fought for election of Mayor from Dehradun and gained popularity since then although she lost but came second defeating the nearest Congress Rival which was an achievement.
Transgendered people or 'Hijras' in India are considered outcasts and have their own community which goes on begging on any marriage or child birth ceremony.
The Hijras--men who dress and act like women--have been a presence in India for generations. Within South Asian society they maintain a third-gender role that has become institutionalized through tradition.
Hijras are often defined as eunuchs (castrated males) and acknowledged both in Hindu and Muslim cultures. Numerous references to eunuchs in the royal courts of India's Muslim rulers are cited as the Hijras' legacy. The fact that many don't consider themselves true Hijras until they have undergone the "emasculation operation" links them to this tradition, as do elements of Islamic practice that they observe, such as burying rather than cremating their dead.

Won't it be great when the day comes when this sort of story is not newsworthy.

Well this sets the stage for what I have been mulling on for weeks. Here is a message I received today. The link at the bottom is a small sample of the work of the most unusual and mind-boggling supporter of the GLBT community anywhere.

Reminds me of Harvey Milk. Keeping such brave souls in our thoughts and prayers is all we can do sometimes.

Thanks for posting this. What's revealing is people who aren't concerned with hiding their diferences of apperance and identity from the accepted norm, are probably a lot less likely to be hiding selfish intentions or a past of indiscretions.
All of the "bible belts" worldwide, (fundies, not limited to Christians of course) should envy such honesty and tolerance.

The Life of the Indian Hijra..from up close .
The blog author is a disciple of Hijda Icon Laxmi Narayan Tripathi..
I have enlisted the Hijda Eunuch Blogs at Photoblog Awards 2009 so that through the humility of my pictures ,my Hijra poems , you will see that the Hijra of the subcontinent is a neglected human specie..distrusted , abused maligned..and in India it is Article 377 the draconian Sodomy Law that kills him much before he begins to relive..
This is my tribute to the Hijra community ..it was not easy shooting their pictures either.
