TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY PROPOSES OPENING US TO MEXICAN TRUCKS
By Michael Cutler
May 24, 2009
NewsWithViews.comI was just sent this disturbing news article this evening from a former colleague who also retired from the INS a number of years ago.
I want you to consider how wrong-headed U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is. His proposal to open up the United States to Mexican truck drivers has the potential to harm our nation on a number of levels. Let me sum them up with a list of “what is wrong with this picture:”
1. Our nation is supposedly determined to secure the border that is supposed to separate the United States from Mexico. If massive numbers of Mexican 18 wheelers are permitted to stream across our border, I am willing to bet that contraband will easily become part of the cargo on many of those trucks.
Contraband in the form of drugs and explosives and biohazards is not the only things to worry about here.
There are also the issues of unfair competition with our own truckers, lower equipment standards for Mexican Trucks resulting in more traffic accident deaths and the general unfairness of forcing American Truckers incur the costs of higher maintenance because of better equipment condition required for them to meet DOT standards while competing with Foreign Truckers who pay lower taxes. In better times, I might support allowing foreign trucking competition coming into the USA as long as they had to meet the same DOT standards as American Truckers and rigorous inspection programs were enforced at the border. [dogs and electronic sensors that cant be bought off with a bribe].
For a while, let us hold off from shipping more USA jobs abroad until our economy recovers.
And, while we are at it, lets keep the money in American hands that pay into Social Security, since the politicians have bankrupt that also.
