 WELCOME to Antarctica where, in the words of expedition leader Greg Mortimer, the weather is "filthy."

The wind is blowing at 50 knots, the sea is grey and angry, and the wind-chill factor is estimated at  -30C
or thereabouts.

No-one is allowed out on deck where snow and freezing spray are making conditions hazardous to say the least.

A scientist told me yesterday that anyone falling into the sea around here would last
perhaps 10 minutes
