We get all riled up when a product or a service does not live up to our expectations or worse even when it makes false statements, should the guidelines applied to the world of commerce be applied to the world of politics.
In A modest proposal, the ever wise and articulate Jeffrey Zeldman outlines that "It is illegal to make false claims in a TV or radio commercial unless you are running for political office.If you’re selling toothpaste, your claims must be vetted by legal and medical professionals. But not if you’re selling a candidate."

Politicians are expected to lie. It's legal.
