Two people were killed in a crash that shut down a portion of the eastbound I-290/Youngmann Highway this morning.

A 30-year-old man and a woman died in the accident, according to the Erie County Medical Examiner's Office.

They were driving separately and were alone in their vehicles at the time of the accident, the office said.

Police have released few details about the crash, and have yet to identify the two people who were killed.

It remains unclear how many vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened at about 4:11 a.m. in the Town of Tonawanda.

Autopsies on the two deceased drivers are scheduled for Monday.

All eastbound lanes between the Elmwood Avenue and Niagara Falls Boulevard exits were shut down for several hours following the wreck.
