Updated: August, 25 | - Two more people have died from Listeria, bringing the total death toll to six.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says two more deaths have been attributed to the ongoing outbreak of listeriosis linked to tainted meat.

The latest deaths bring to six the total number of deaths that federal officials are blaming on the outbreak, all of them in Ontario.

Previously: August, 25 | - In response to an outbreak of Listeria bacteria that has killed four people (three from Ontario, one from B.C.), Maple Leaf Foods has issued a Canada-wide recall of all cured meats "manufactured" at a contaminated Toronto plant.

Saying the company was only widening its measures as a precaution, Maple Leaf and its distributors have issued a Canada-wide alert to restaurants, retailers and now individual consumers to pull the potentially listeria-laced meats traced to the Ontario facility from their menus, grocery-store shelves and refrigerators.

For the second day in a row, a grim-faced Michael McCain, president and chief executive of Maple Leaf, addressed the media to answer questions about the effort and convey his regrets to the public.

"This is a terrible, terrible tragedy," he said, "and to those people who have become ill, and to the families that have lost loved ones, I want to express once again my deepest and most sincere sympathies."

Meanwhile, Windsor, Ontario has had its first confirmed ilness from Listeria.

The health unit was notified Sunday that an 81-year-old woman living in an assisted care facility is sick from Listeria, a deadly food-borne bacteria spoiling Maple Leaf meat products.

A press conference will be held at 2 p.m. to discuss the case, but officials are not releasing the name of the facility in which the woman resided.

Maple Leaf's stock continues to drop like a stone. Are deli meats safe anymore?

To answer my question, I say deli meats -- and any other hyper-processed meat product that gets "constructed" rather than "cooked" -- aren't safe anymore. If it happened to Maple Leaf, logic says that it could happen to any big company.

I'm glad you answered your own question, it's important.

julianw, I like this story. It's good stuff.  And you all don't like the meat from the U.S.  I think, you might want to rethink that.  We all want the food we buy to be safe.  How folks die from meat is that less then 5% is tested.

Alertnet are reporting 12 people out of 26 confirmed cases have died.

Listeria

You can get very sick from some ready-to-eat foods if you wait too long to eat them. The sickness is called Listeriosis. A germ called Listeria causes it. It's unusual because it can grow at refrigerator temperatures where most other foodborne bacteria do not. You can't see it, smell it, or taste it. Only heat can kill it, but if heated food cools, listeria may grow again.

You should avoid some foods and take special care with others to prevent listeriosis.

Who's at risk?

Pregnant women and their unborn babies
Older adults
People with cancer, AIDS, and other diseases that weaken the immune systems.
How can I reduce my risk?
Keep your fridge set at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or colder.
Use precooked and ready-to-eat foods as soon as you can.

I don't know how these guys do it, but there's already a full page up on Wikipedia about this current situation ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Canadian_listeriosis_outbreak ...

The Hysteria outbreak ... or sorry Listeria outbreak sounds like a SARS epidemic in the media. In fact the deaths have occurred almost exclusively in Nursing home situations in individuals with compromised immune systems. Meat products are actually extremely safe compared to many other products. I wonder how many people in N.A. each year die from drinking soda pop and other high sugar foods due to diabetes issues (my guess is its in the tens of thousands). In fact, there is a far better chance of dying from a bolt of lightning than dying from Listeria.

I am not insensitive to the fact that a dozen people have been affected by this problem ... but the reality is that situations like this will arise in the food industry on rare occassions even thought companies like Maple Leaf and others are actually very diligent in their food handling practices. Far more people will die of Salmonella poisoning this year but this will not get reported as an "outbreak" because it will be generalized cased through the population.

Years ago, I also got sick by eating some deli-meat, I  did not know what hit me but spent  few days in bed and recovered. Since then,  I hardly eat them any more. Now I know, maybe this happens more than what they let us know.
