Pakistan has very deep social divisions and it is one the most feudal society in the world. Feudal lords still control rural Pakistan and they run their own law. Pakistan’s feudal class wields strong influence over the society and politics of  the poor nation of 142 million people. People often take law in their hands and dispense the justice.  In this shocking case two robbers were burnt alive.

Two suspected dacoits were burnt to death by enraged people late on Tuesday night in Buffer Zone, witnesses said.

They said two dacoits waylaid a man, Mohammed Riaz, in Sector 15, but some passers-by came to his rescue. They first gave the suspects a good hiding and then put them to the torch.

Edhi ambulances shifted the bodies to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where the suspected bandits remained unidentified.

Sanjay Jha, I like this story. It's good stuff. another such unfortunate incident has happened before when a mob meted out their version of 'punishment' to robbers. the reason for such shocking reactions from people against robbers/dacoits in a big city may not always be a direct relation with the feudal system, but yes, 'quick justice' out of frustration, as the legal system sometimes takes a few years to mete it out. (the country's population is not 142 million but 167,762,040 - July 2008 est.).

What's a 'dacoit'? We call it vigilantism.
