Two weeks since historic pro-gay marriage decision
It has been two weeks since parts of the so called federal Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, were struck down. The overturning of the federal ban on recognization of marriages between same sex couples was historic, as was the decision that has allowed gay couples in the state of California to once again marry.
But, these decisions weren't Loving V. Virginia, the 1960s Supreme Court case that overturned all state bans on interracial marriages. It is going to be quite some time before gay couples can wed in Mississippi or Oklahoma, though that day is coming. Of course there have been critics, saying things like "Jesus wept." The question is, did Jesus wept because of his support of gay couples to marry?
A conservative talk show host stated that gay marriage is not part of the black community. What? So what if historically gays haven't supported same sex marriage, no group over the span of decades supported marriage equality. Although atheists have probably 90% plus support for same sex marriages today, if you polled atheists in 1940 if they support same sex marriages, I doubt you would get majority support.
Over time, that support increased, though an atheist in 1940 was still much more likely to support marriage equality (as was an atheist in 1880 when it came to the right of women to vote) then the average Christian. There is nothing in the DNA of African Americans, or any other group, to have them inherently oppose marriage equality.
Many of them have gay friends, family, aunts, uncles and co-workers. In fact, there probably isn't a group in America that has seen such sudden increase in support of marriage equality, even though America as a whole has seen a rapid increase in support of it.
In related anti-gay news, a cult/religious leader named Lord Moses killed a 4 year old boy, unfortunately caught in the cult of this madman because of his brainwashed mother, because the boy slapped the butt of another boy. This supposedly meant the boy, Jadon Higganbothan, was gay.
Fortunately this nut has been found guilty by a trial but that does not take back the murders he has committed. Religion, at least in part, motiviated this madman and motiviated his hate. Once you take away the violence, he is only different in degree, not kind, then the anti-gay preachers in the U.S. who preach hatred of gays, atheists and women.
Remember, you can support marriage equality, and gay rights, by supporting the Human Rights Campaign and other pro-gay rights groups.
So once again, congratulations to the gay couples in California who can now marry and the already married gay couples in states that already have marriage equality. To paraphrase General Eisenhower talking about the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, the hour of equality for gay couples in the U.S., is approaching.
