Birmingham, UK: Two young women have been murdered in a frenzied attack in the UKs second largest city Birmingham. A man has been arrested trying to flee the country by ferry. No names have yet been released of either victims or suspect. The apartments are sold as luxury apartments but it is rumoured that some of them are now owned by pimps who use the flats for parties and prostitution. It is not known if the young women murdered have any connections with prostitution.

Police said they were greeted with a scene of carnage after the apartment block's concierge kicked in the door to find the walls splattered with blood and the flat ransacked.

The victims, both in their early 20s, were bludgeoned and possibly stabbed to death.

Yesterday morning a man was arrested as he tried to flee the country.

The women were killed over the weekend but senior detectives said there was no clear motive. Locals said the women hosted a big party on Saturday night.

They both knew the arrested man, although officers refused to reveal details of him other than he was not related to either of them and did not live at the apartment.

There was no sign of a forced entry to the apartment or robbery.

Police were called to Jupiter Apartments, a block of luxury flats in Ryland Street, Birmingham, on Monday afternoon, whose residents include the DJ and former Big Brother winner Kate Lawler.

The women's families had contacted the apartments' concierge after they became worried about their whereabouts.

He forced entry into the £200,000 two-bedroom flat to be greeted by a scene of devastation.

Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Mirfield, head of West Midlands Police's major investigations unit, said the women, believed to be students from overseas, had been subjected to a "sustained and frenzied attack" that could have involved an array of weapons.

There was a "substantial amount of blood inside many of the rooms", which presented a "challenging forensic site".
