18-Year-Old Student, Tyler Clementi, Who Was Filmed Having a Gay Sexual Encounter By Fellow Rutgers University Students Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei, Has Reportedly Committed Suicide

The victim's name has now been identified as Tyler Clementi, and the freshman from Ridgewood is believed to have jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge last Thursday September 23. His car was found nearby with his cell phone and computer inside according to PIX 11 News.

Clementi's body has not yet been recovered, but at least two people spotted him standing on the south walk of the George Washington Bridge around 8:50pm on September 23.

Dharun Ravi, 18, and Molly Wei, 18, reportedly secretly placed a camera inside Clementi's dorm room and filmed him having a sexual encounter with another man on September 19. Clips were then posted on the Internet for everyone to view.

Dharun Ravi was the victim's roomate and is thought to be the main conspirator: Gawker reports that after he filmed the encounter, he posted about it on Twitter (his Twitter account has since been deleted). His first tweet about the incident read "Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay".

Then a few days later Ravi tweeted "Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes it’s happening again." The two have not commented on the incident and Dharun Ravi's Facebook profile has been locked down to anyone except his friends.

Both Ravi and Wei have both been charged with two counts each of invasion of privacy for placing a camera in the victim's room without his knowledge on September 19. Ravi has also been charged with two more counts of invasion of privacy for attempting to use the same hidden camera to view Clementi again during a sexual act on September 21.

Ravi was released on $25,000 bail and Wei was released on her own recognizance after both surrendered to police.

According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan, it is a fourth-degree crime to collect or view images depicting nudity or sexual content of an individual without that person's consent. The crime becomes a third-degree offense if the images are transmitted or distributed.

Both Ravi and Wei could receive up to five years in jail.
