Department of Defense ups ante in Persian gulf,  increases missile defense

In preparation of the Obama Administration's increasing sanctions against Iran and Ahmadinejad,  the military has stealthily upped the presence of eight Patriot missiles in the gulf region,  AP says.

All of the initiatives  -  which may include cooperation with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf allies  -  are aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran.

As the Obama administration edges toward imposing tougher sanctions on Iran, it has begun upgrading its approach to defending its Persian Gulf allies against potential Iranian missile strikes, officials said Saturday.

The United States has quietly increased the capability of land-based Patriot defensive missiles in several Gulf Arab nations, and one military official said the Navy is beefing up the presence of ships capable of knocking down hostile missiles in flight.

As the Obama administration moves closer to imposing tough economic sanctions against Iran, the US military has reportedly installed and upgraed the capability of land-based Patriot defensive missiles in Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE and Qatar. The Patriot missile systems, which originally were deployed in the region to shoot down aircraft, now can hit missiles in flight. The US has now deployed eight Patriot missile batteries - two each in the four countries

The US Navy is also reportedly deploying a number of Aegis ships in the Persian Gulf capable of knocking down hostile missiles in flight.

One military official has told AP the adjustments in the Gulf should be seen as prudent defensive measures designed to deter Iran from taking aggressive action in the region.

No one wants that kind of war anywhere on earth. It is, though, worth remembering that Israel was the first nation in the region to get hold of nuclear technology.
