Just as the Iraq war is winding down
the Afghan war is getting bigger.
Thousands of U.S. Marines descended upon the volatile Helmand River valley in helicopters and armored convoys early Thursday morning, mounting an operation that represents the first large-scale test of the U.S. military's new counter-insurgency strategy in Afghanistan.

This strategy can work if the Marines remain where in the towns and villages they have occupied. With 4000 troops I would think that they are stretched rather thin. It would be interesting to see what kind of rotation plan they have
Success will depend on gaining the trust of the local population and an assurance that they are safe from Taliban retaliation.
