U.S. NAVAL BASE GUANTANAMO, Cuba - Omar Khadr has been sentenced to 40 years by a military jury.

“U.S. NAVAL BASE GUANTANAMO, Cuba — Omar Khadr has been handed a stiff but symbolic 40-year sentence by a U.S. military jury, but could return to Canada in little over a year in a transfer that the Harper government has agreed to “favourably consider.”

A seven-member jury of military officers sentenced Khadr to 40 years in prison on Sunday for crimes that included the murder of a U.S. soldier when Khadr was 15 years old.

But under a plea deal with the Pentagon, Khadr will serve, at most, another eight years behind bars, and he can apply to be transferred to Canadian custody within a year.”
