U.S. Patriot Missiles To Be Placed 35 Miles from Russia
U.S. Patriot missiles will be placed in Poland, just 35 miles from the Russian border in agreement reached between the United States and Poland, the AFP is reporting.
Poland's Defense Minister, Bogdan Klich, says the Patriot-style missiles will be located in Morag close to the Russian region of Kaliningrad.
"Morag was chosen as the location long ago, but we didn't make it public," Bogdan Klich said, quoted by Poland's PAP news agency.
The Polish defense minister goes on to say that the Patriot style missiles should be in place in Morag by March. He dismisses any concerns about the move as a threat to Russian security and is not worried about a build up of Russian forces in the Baltics
However, the Global Security Newswire reports the following,
A senior naval officer told the RIA Novosti news agency today that Russia plans to build up its Baltic fleet as a result of the U.S. decision to field the Patriots in Poland, Reuters reported.
"The surface, underwater and aviation elements of the Baltic fleet will be strengthened," the officer said.
Russia has been vocal about its opposition to the expansion of NATO forces and weapons capabilities in countries like Poland.

Interesting announcement. What happened to the good will between the US and Russia. Is all that up in smoke now too?
at 13:36 on January 21st, 2010
I don't understand the reasoning behind the decision, if Russia really is still a threat, the west has the capablity to hit them from a lot further away, so why do this? It will just lead to another escalation in tensions, haven't the US got enough on their plate already without more drum beating?

Well, that is nice. The US does still persist in throwing us back into a cold war and this even though G.W. Bush is out and B. Obama is in. And Poland is lacking maturity and acts like a rug state with in the EU.
I would not be surprised if China and Russia will soon put missiles all around North America, like in Cuba, Venezuela and Maybe even the North Pole.
Further it is exactly why Iran and N/ Koreas will do their best to arm as well.

Shouldn't we be blaming the Poles here....it is their country. Not like the US invaded them so we could put the defensive missiles in place.
at 17:37 on January 21st, 2010
As far as I can remember, the Patriot missiles are not nuclear, and are meant to knock down other low flying missiles. Still, it seems like a provocation to me ...
at 06:16 on January 22nd, 2010
Sara, good point however, the missile it self can be armed with any war head, and adapted to nuclear war heads just as it may be adapted to Bio war heads or TNT.
Poland is a member of the EU and is going against EU policies and diplomatic channels.
The EU just signed several important treaties with Russia. What Poland is doing will harm the EU and Russia. The only benefactor here are the US who may profit from relations deteriorating between the EU and Russia.
If I was Russia, I would be very upset as well and sadly Russia and China have no other choice now then to put as many missiles as possible around the US.
Russia as well as China will make sure that Iran, Venezuela and others get the Nuclear bomb now as well.
We just entered another cold war, only this time it may actually get serious and make the previous cold war look like a walk in the park.
And we are suppose to trust the US now?

"Russia and China have no other choice now then to put as many missiles as possible around the US."
That is something new? Since when did they NOT have missiles pointed at the US?
Not in your lifetime.
Why not ask rather asked the Poles how they feel about being occupied and threatened by foreign thugs for 50 years?
It is rank hypocrisy to accuse the US while excusing others!

H.A. I am not certain where you have been for the past 20 years, but Russia has reduced its fire power and stopped the clod war.
Poland was part of the Warsaw pact whose counterpart is/was NATO and back then pointed Missiles at Western Europe.
If you truly believe in your reasoning then it should be okay for any one to point a fully loaded gun into your face with their hand on the trigger and saying that there is noting you have to worry about since it is just for self defence and just in case. If you are okay with that, then I accept your reasoning as genuine, if not then you reasoning is no different then that of a bully or tyrant.
Remember Russia is a democracy and today with its wealth far more powerful then the Soviet Union ever was and will be able outgun the US. Further China is the may creditor of the US and can outgun them as well. This Cold war the US just started is suicide for the US it self.
It would have been far wiser to stay friends with Russia and China and work together rather then make more enemies. The US needs Russia and China to survive. Only a fool would cut of the hand of those that can save him.
The wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Yemen are not going well and it looks more and more that those will be lost. Iran will get the Nuclear bomb now and Russia and China will no longer stop them, same for North Korea and Venezuela.
I do not think you realise the extend of this nor the magnitude. This is a declaration of war, another cold war for sure.
Missiles are no use against terrorist only to attack countries and putting them right into Russia face is not only provocative but plain stupid.

I am not certain where you get your information. Would certainly be interested in your sources.
While Russia certainly reduced it's firepower, the US did as well. Do you have ANY inside information that Rusia now longer targets the US? How about China? Are we to believe that the friendly Chinese don't have any missiles pointing at us?
"Remember Russia is a democracy and today with its wealth far more powerful then the Soviet Union ever was and will be able outgun the US."
When will they be able to that? They have had trouble paying troops and providing enough food for their soldiers at times since the fall of the USSR.
We need Russia to survive? Gee, no kidding! Explain that, please.
"Missiles are no use against terrorist only to attack countries and putting them right into Russia face is not only provocative but plain stupid."
Might want to explain that to Israel and Japan and Korea - they seem to think highly of the Patriot Missiles. Might also want to explain how the Patriot is used offensively.

I'm really unclear how putting up exclusively defensive missiles can be seen as a "provocation".
It isn't like the Patriots can be made into weapons that can be turned on Russia.
Unless the Russians feel that they reserve the right to bully the Polish nation at will, they should have no objection to purely defensive weapons being deployed.
Admittedly, their stated intention of building up their Baltic fleet seems to indicate that they feel free to try to intimidate Poland. I'm surprised at that - them having a history of being a benevolent people and all.

So, the Russian official - Russians, as we all know, are always trustworthy - denies what the Russian news agency quotes another "senior navel officer" as saying?
Okay. I'm gullible, sounds good to me.

While I understand why Poland would be nervous, I find this development surprising. There was much cheering over the new found cooperation between Russia and the new Obama Administration.
This, in my mind, is another diplomatic failure and misreading of the Obama Administration. The START treaty has, as of now, not been renewed. With this action the good will that was portrayed between Russia and the United States seems to have all but disappeared.
Nobel Peace Prize, eh?
at 04:44 on January 22nd, 2010
Maybe there was a misspelling.......maybe should have been "Nobel Pizza Prize" ?
at 06:15 on January 22nd, 2010
Who knows? I think that Nobel Peace Prize was premature.
at 06:36 on January 22nd, 2010
This announcement is also explained in the video, "The Obama Deception". It's about the new world order and ways to coerce other countries into not resisting the installation of a "new world order" and "one world government"

Sarah, might i suggest you write a letter to the Polish people and explain to them how loving and peaceful the Russians are now that the cold war is over. You might use Georgia as an example! That should help the situation, no?
