The UK continues to heap tax increases on the country's bust aviation industry, now approving drastic price increases to flights landing at Heathrow and Gatwick. The move comes just as the open skies agreement was set to make flights between London and the US much cheaper.

The UK's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has bowed to pressure from BAA to increase the amount the airport operator can charge passengers.

The CAA set a maximum charge over five years from April 1, 2008 for London Heathrow of 12.80 stg per passenger for 2008/09, an increase of 2.44 stg or 23.5 pct from the current price cap in year one. The regulator set a maximum charge of 6.79 stg per passenger at London Gatwick, a like-for-like increase of 1.18 stg or 21 pct over the first year.
