The move is being fuelled by the UK's looming energy crisis.

Within five years, many of the existing nuclear and coal power stations will be shut - leaving a gaping hole at the heart  of the national grid.

At the same time, the EU is demanding that 15 per cent of the UK's energy comes from renewable sources such as solar, wind, tide and wave power.

Yesterday's consultation paper says most of that extra green energy should come from an expansion of wind farms - from 2,000 today to around 7,000 by 2020.

SOLARLIFE, I like this story. But can we believe it?  People like Grumpy Gordan like to signal new policies almost before they have properly thought them through!  A few years ago, he (or was it Blair?) announced they would rebuild every school in the country. Now, they have quietly admitted the policy is two years behind schedule, and there is every prospect it will bequietly shelved during this credit crunch! Forgive my scepticism!  That 250 odd money whatever will quietly disappear when we've gone on to the next announcement.

gerrypopplestone, can we believe It ?  A credit crunch storm... we will be back to unfiltered coal power plants; possible. So far this year 2008 a secrest energy plan 2050 was signed between G. Brown and Sarkozy to deliver Solar Electricity from the Sahara over French High tension power lines to the UK. The plan is based on a new Renewables, geothermal super grid for Europe planned by the Germans. With politcis running into trouble the mining in Africa and elswhere for Uranium not so sure. France's mining contracts end most 2015.
